This case study was conducted to generate insights on the financial sustainability of selected VDFSGs and to gather information on members’ perceptions of the usefulness of these institutions in coping with household and climate change-related shocks or stresses. Financial sustainability was analyzed by conducting a detailed financial analysis of six selected VDFSGs to determine the sufficiency of interest payments as revenue to cover total costs as well as to evaluate loan recovery and equity build- up.

Within the framework of the Development Programs with a Territorial Approach (PDET) Routes for Stabilization, program of the European Fund for Peace, 6.3 million euros in financing was obtained. The livestock component will benefit 370 production units (farms), 560 hectares and 540 mainly small and medium-sized producers. CGIAR innovations key for the achievement of this outcome were based on the research on silvopastoral systems, environmental and economic benefits, in terms of biodiversity, soil health, forage quality, income, and livelihoods.

Many CGIAR centers are developing forage crops, but seed quality declines once farmers reproduce the seeds for planting. With this simple mobile seed cleaning and treatment unit, seed quality and production capacity can be maintained sustainably. Four farmer cooperatives in North-western Tunisia with over 1,000 members are using the technology, and from October 2019-December 2021 the quantity of cleaned/treated forage seeds increased from 240 to 908 tons and the number of individual users from 138 to 417.

Village Tank Cascade Systems (VTCSs) in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka have evolved as sustainable ecosystems through human interventions to ensure water availability and other services for people and their environs during the last few millennia. However, VTCSs are vulnerable to global environmental changes resulting in continual deterioration of ecological health and hydro-socio-ecological status, crucial for the food and livelihood security of rural farming communities in the dry zone.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a country with a high agricultural productivity potential; however, the agribusiness sector remains unattractive to youths. This study examined the extent to which perceived social norms and psychological capital affect youths’ intentions to pursue agribusiness opportunities in the Eastern DRC. Consumption of potatoes and potato products is growing rapidly in Southeast Asia. There are significant opportunities for improved potato production and utilization of technologies in this part of the world to address poverty, food security, and environmental degradation. Potato production is also a highly profitable activity. The market for fresh consumption of potatoes is expanding in most of Asia in response to income growth and urbanization.

Participatory variety selection (PVS) is the selection of new varieties among fixed lines by farmers under different target environments. It is increasingly being used to select and promote new crop breeding materials in most African countries. A gender-responsive PVS tool was piloted in Embu and Nakuru in the first and second cropping seasons of 2019 to understand similarities and differences between men’s and women’s varietal and trait preferences for biofortified released varieties and local bean varieties (landraces).
