Funding Agricultural Innovation for the Global South: Does it Promote Sustainable Agricultural Intensification? Methodology Report

December, 2020
Sri Lanka

This document illustrates in detail the research and modelling methodology followed to estimate funding on innovation in agriculture, innovation in SAI, and break-down by various tags and conducted by Dalberg Advisors Asia. This report aims to serve as a guide to replicating the research and analysis for future studies.

Farm management and varietal choice in cassava-based production systems in Colombia

December, 2020
Colombia

Cassava is a commodity root crop grown globally for food and industrial purposes. In Colombia, it is the ninth most planted agricultural product involving more than 140 thousand farmers. Despite the key role it plays in the Colombian agricultural sector, information regarding the crop’s management or how cassava growers select on cultivars to grow for different purposes is limited or inexistent. This working paper exploits two separate primary data surveys at household-level in the Caribbean region and Cauca main cassava growing areas of Colombia.

A global meta-analysis of climate services and decision-making in agriculture

December, 2020
Global

Harmonizing the supply of climate information with the type of information needed by next-users is crucial for effective weather and climate services (CS). Understanding of information demand could help reshape supply side based CS that have dominated the field over the last few decades. Most CS have been developed using a ‘loading dock’ model, whereby products are designed by information suppliers with little input from or consultation with users of climate services.

Genetic Resources 2(3)

December, 2020
Global

Genetic Resources is an open access journal disseminating global knowledge and tools used by the community of practitioners of plant, animal and forest genetic resources involved in monitoring, collecting, maintaining, conserving, characterizing and using genetic resources for food, agriculture and forestry. Genetic Resources publishes original research as well as methods, strategies, guidelines, case studies or reviews on a variety of topics of interest on the present and future use of genetic resources.

Scaling the Climate-Smart Village model in national-level programs: The recommendations for adoption in the implementation of the Nông Thôn Mới (Vietnam’s National Target Program on New Rural Development) 2021-2030 Strategy

December, 2020
Netherlands

The New Rural Development Program or Nông Thôn Mới (NTM) is a national target program of Vietnam that has enabled 57% of rural communes to achieve the NTM status, which aims to raise the socio-economic standard of living of small communities while facilitating agricultural development. Agricultural development is threatened by the impacts of climate change, which carries high risk for an agriculture-dependent country like Vietnam.

Climate Investment Plan for the Agriculture Sector: A Decision Support Tool for Scaling up Climate-Smart Agriculture Technologies and Practices in Gandaki Province, Nepal

December, 2020
Nepal

Gandaki Province is centrally located in Nepal with most of its area being hills and high hills (64%). There are 11 districts in Gandaki Province with one metropolitan city, namely, Pokhara; 26 municipalities and 58 rural municipalities. Gandaki Province contributes about 9% to the GDP of the whole country. Integrating gender into Kenya’s evolving seed policies and regulations for roots and tubers

December, 2020
Peru

In many developing countries where farmers grow vegetatively propagated crops (VPCs), they are often unable
to increase on-farm productivity partly due to limited access to quality seeds. Yet, seed policy and legal
frameworks for VPCs in many countries show a limited consideration of the specific characteristics of the seed
systems for root, tuber and banana crops. Moreover, there is a lack of understanding of how the implementation
of current seed policy frameworks affect participation by men and women as either seed producers or seed

A real-time fluorescent reverse transcription quantitative PCR assay for rapid detection of genetic markers’ expression associated with Fusarium Wilt of banana biocontrol activities in bacillus

December, 2020
Global

Fusarium wilt of banana, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc), especially Tropical Race 4 (TR4), seriously threatens banana production worldwide. There is no single effective control measure, although certain Bacillus strains secrete antibiotics as promising disease-biocontrol agents. This study identified five Bacillus strains displaying strong antibiotic activity against TR4, using a systemic assessment for presence/absence of genetic markers at genome level, and expres sion profiles at transcriptome level.

Impact of youth-in-agribusiness program on employment creation in Nigeria

December, 2020
Nigeria

The increasing rate of youth unemployment in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, remains among the challenges to social and economic stability. Accordingly, the Nigerian government implemented several interventions, including the Youth-in-Agribusiness (YIA) program to reduce youth unemployment. However, the effect of these programs on gainful employment creation is yet to be documented. Therefore, this study examined the impact of the YIA program on creating gainful employment among the youth.
