One of the options for the development of family farming is to promote access to different markets (national or international). Related to this, various contributions in relation to the analysis of the development problems of rural markets highlight two fundamental aspects that must be faced: the few opportunities in local markets and the limited access to more dynamic markets with competitive products.

The presentation delves into the multifaceted issues surrounding silvopasture degradation. It investigates the root causes, with a spotlight on the adverse impacts of climate change, improper grazing practices, and encroachment of agricultural activities. Silvopastoral systems, as a subset of agroforestry, strategically integrate woody perennials, forages, and livestock to enhance agricultural production and environmental services.

For the 1.5 billion people living in fragile and conflict-affected settings,
livelihood challenges are compounded by climate change, unsustainable
resource consumption, poor governance, and weak social cohesion. In
Mozambique, a significant 45% of its inhabitants live below the poverty line,
and a staggering 80% rely on subsistence agriculture, a sector highly
susceptible to climate change. Socio-ecological risks have therefore become
increasingly prevalent along with environmental degradation and conflict.

Through action research across six anchored countries in Africa, AICCRA aims at scaling access and use of enhanced climate information services (CIS) and evidence-based climate-smart agriculture (CSA) technologies and innovations for effective climate risk management and sustainable productivity improvement in various agricultural value chains and sub-sectors.

This study was conducted through the CGIAR Asian Mega -Deltas (AMD) initiative, a multi -year research program to secure food systems of the Mekong Delta, Irrawaddy Delta, and the Ganges Delta for climate and livelihood resilience. The study contributes to Work Package 3 (WP 3) on derisking delta orientated value chains through bundled digital climate advisory services (DCAS+), and focuses on Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. DCAS comprise mobile phones, digital platforms, radio, and TV, as well as digitally enabled services such as extension services and printed bulletins.

AGRHYMET has recently proposed a novel approach for translating seasonal climate forecasts into actionable information for adaptation planning for agriculture and water sectors using sectoral biophysical and process-based models. The aim is to finetune and generate forecast-based recommendations for these two sectors to better support effective adaptation planning and reduce risks associated with biases and subjective recommendations.

Food production includes a complex and varied set of agricultural and nonagricultural activities, involving a growing number of sectors and actors that influence the way food is produced, processed, distributed, and consumed. Recently, and especially after the 2021 United Nation Food Systems Summit (UNFSS), it has been proposed that this conglomerate of activities and socioeconomic actors be jointly identified as food systems.

As part of the AICCRA, the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) are tasked to develop curricula and training materials to accelerate the mainstreaming of Climate Information Services (CIS) and Climate- Smart Agriculture (CSA) into University’s curricula in Africa. This report describes the activities of a training of trainers’ (ToT) workshop on soil nutrient and water management in crop production course module, held from 28 February to 03 March 2023.

Women are less represented in agricultural research and development sector representing only 25% of agricultural scientists in Africa in the last decade, and a much lower proportion of decision makers on agriculture and climate change at institutional, national, and global levels. Research activities on climate change and outputs must be inclusive, gender-oriented and promote gender equity to enable women scientists to make a greater contribution and be represented at all levels.

This conceptual and methodological note introduces a conceptual framework designed to assess multi-scalar climate adaptation policy instruments by gauging the extent to which they consider linkages between climate, peace and security. The purpose of this methodology is to assess whether policy instruments – and the activities and operations enacted within them - are intentionally formulated, implemented, and evaluated with regard to their effectiveness in mitigating conflict and societal instability risks, and to contribute to sustainable peacebuilding efforts.
