Mineral fertilizer use in land-scarce conditions: case of Rwanda

December, 2019
Rwanda

This study was undertaken to investigate the use of mineral fertilizer by smallholder farmers in order to understand the set of factors influencing the decisions of smallholder farmers to use fertilizers in land-scarce conditions. Using descriptive analysis and the Cragg’s double-hurdle model, the study identified and analyzed factors that determine smallholder farmer adoption of mineral fertilizers and those that affect the intensity of household mineral fertilizer use.

Livestock policies in Son La Province, Vietnam - a review

December, 2019

Since the market-oriented Doi Moi reforms of the 1980s and 1990s, Vietnam’s livestock sector has experienced rapid growth. Although policies have been implemented at the national and provincial levels to guide this growth in a sustainable manner, blind spots and implementation gaps remain. The impact of CGIAR centre research on use of planted forages by tropical smallholders

December, 2019
Kenya

This chapter provides information on the common problems faced by livestock farmers in Africa and Asia, such as insufficient availability of high-quality feed, declines in grazing resources in response to the expansion of cultivated land and poor control over grazing rights, among others. The importance of the cultivation of green forages specifically for feeding livestock as a potential means of addressing the feed gap is discussed. The potential and actual impact of planted forages are presented and success cases emerging from CGIAR research are reviewed.

Priority needs for improvement of activity data to support MRV in Ethiopia’s livestock sector

December, 2019
Global

To complement an ongoing CCAFS project ‘Enhancing capacities for MRV of sustainable livestock action in East Africa (Kenya and Ethiopia)’, implemented by UNIQUE forestry and land use, ACIAR is supporting CCAFS to implement a Small Research Activity (SRA) entitled ‘Building capacities for an integrated livestock MRV system in Ethiopia’. The objective of the SRA is to support improvements in methods and procedures used to produce and manage the livestock activity data required for measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of greenhouse gases (GHG) in Ethiopia.

A framework for identifying country-specific MRV improvement needs in the livestock sector: Lessons from Kenya, Ethiopia and Nigeria

December, 2019

The working paper presents a framework for assessing country-specific needs, opportunities and priorities for improving measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of livestock greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and emission reductions. The framework consists of 13 guiding questions that are implemented in an eight-step assessment. The steps are:
Phase 1: Clarify the context
Step 1: Assess current and future expected trends in the livestock sector and their GHG emissions implications.
Step 2: Identify policies and measures that are expected to impact GHG emissions.

Roadmap for livestock monitoring, reporting, and verification improvement in Ethiopia

December, 2019
Ethiopia

This workshop is part of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) supported CCAFS project “Enhancing capacities for measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of sustainable livestock actions in Ethiopia.” Ethiopia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) states the intention to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the livestock sub-sector. The national GHG inventory is one of the main tools through which Ethiopia can measure and report livestock subsector GHG emissions.
