The session focused on advancing responsible land-based investment (RLBI) governance through a comprehensive, multi-actor, and multi-pronged approach. Discussions centered on the ALIGN Technical Support Facility’s efforts to foster effective governance frameworks, emphasizing the importance of political economy considerations in navigating complex land governance contexts. Emerging pressures, such as climate change and the need for a just transition, were highlighted as key factors influencing land-based investment decisions. Participants examined institutional coordination strategies, with case studies demonstrating the value of cross-sectoral coherence and collaboration in land tenure recognition and protection. These strategies underscored the necessity of cohesive and well-coordinated institutional frameworks to support sustainable land governance. The session also explored lessons learned from community empowerment initiatives, particularly in contexts of large-scale government land acquisitions. Action research and coalition-building efforts were discussed as effective means to strengthen legal empowerment at the community level, enhancing local capacities to engage in decision-making processes. In addition, practical tools, such as model contract clauses, were presented as vital resources to support national investment screening processes and legal reforms. The dialogue emphasized the importance of people-centered data generation, advocating for transparent and inclusive land-based investments that prioritize the needs of local communities. Overall, the session underscored the necessity of a coordinated and inclusive approach to land governance, one that accounts for diverse interests while fostering sustainable development.
