The assessment of the policies, strategies, legislation, regulation and functioning of the cashew market in Tanzania is framed within the impact of the overall competitiveness of the sector. In doing so it is important to recognise that the cashew sector throughout Africa is in fact two chains which do not always operate in a cohesive manner but which are really only linked at one end the farm gate and at the other on the retail shelf. The analytical framework is to consider the Tanzanian cashew sector within the framework of its competitiveness as a pointer to the impact of current and past policy and regulation. This was executed as stated above by a close reading of the existing studies and by interview, discussion and debate with a range of stakeholders. Through this methodology the objective is to assess stakeholders, analysts and reporters propositions for the improvement of the sector and to suggest some propositions for policy and regulation improvement.
