In het veenweidegebied van West-Nederland is het laatste decennium op grote schaal een begin gemaakt met de voorbereiding en uitvoering van ruilverkavelingsplannen. Een belangrijk aspect hiervan is de verbetering van de ontwatering door een ingrijpende polderpeilverlaging, hetgeen voor de moderne veehouder vele voordelen biedt. Als uitvloeisel van de MER wetgeving is onderzoek gewenst naar de gevolgen van de veranderde waterhuishouding op de processen in de bodem en het slootmilieu in veengebieden.
