POLICE have told Baruni village leaders to take land matters to court and not to take the law into their own hands to affect innocent lives.
Zone one commander, Chief Inspector Fred Tundu said this following the alleged attack of three policemen from the Idubada police post at Motukea island, outside Port Moresby, last Wednesday.
It was alleged that the three reservist policemen attended to a complaint at Motukea that caretakers or security guards of a portion of land chased away village boys trying to sh using nets in the sea, and in the process the caretakers also cut their shing nets.
It is alleged that the ocers were attacked by the caretakers with bush knives, and two are ghting for their lives at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Mr Tundu addressed more than 300 villagers from Baruni who staged a peaceful protest to Motukea island last Friday to meet with representatives of a company owned by Je Kennedy, and were turned away at the Porebada junction.
The chief inspector told the villagers that the security rm looking after the portion of land and the caretakers or security guards that allegedly attacked their policemen have decamped the area since Wednesday and police are still searching for them.
“We will remove everyone on that land to allow for an investigation to take place,” Mr Tundu said.
He told Baruni village councillor, Edward Collet and village leaders to meet with Porebada and other neighbouring Motuan leaders to draft a petition to give to the company owner Je Kennedy this week. Sta ocer to NCD and Central Command, Inspector David Terry said coastal villagers are selling customary land everywhere for their own benet and many are being affected.
“Ask yourself who sold the land to them, bringing in outsiders, that’s why they are taking your land away,” Mr Terry said.
He said as a democratic country, the matter should be taken to court and not solved with bush knives and axes.
Councillor Collet said they will control their youths and meet again in the village to draft a petition. “We want to settle this issue quickly to make make sure these illegal settlers who are claiming our land and sea are removed,” he said.
