Four years ago, Phu Thap Boek -- a popular mountainous attraction in Phetchabun province -- became synonymous with the success of the military regime in reclaiming forest land, or the Tuang Kuen Phuen Pa campaign when the state took back forest land from illegal occupants.

Prime Minister James Marape said in the last 40 years, the government revenue collection through cash payments has been riddled with corruption, nepotism, and mishandling of revenue and that will be changed. He said this when launching the GoLands and eLands online payment system for the Department of Lands in Port Moresby yesterday. 

“We will be migrating to the online payment system with every department that deals with revenue collection and I am happy that the Lands Department has stepped out as the rst to moving into that space and policy vision,” he said.

The National Assembly standing committee approved three draft laws on Thursday to be submitted to the expert commissions for review.

The National Assembly’s Commission for Economy, Finance, Banking and Audit will review and study two draft laws – the Control, Use and Management of State Property; and Management of Commercial Gambling.

Another draft law before the Commission for Legislation and Justice is on the adoption of treaties between Cambodia and South Korea involving assistance for criminal justice.

The Prey Lang Protected Area has lost more than 100,000 hectares of forest between 2000 and 2019, more than half of which became plantations, according to a report released August 10 by the NGO Jesuit Service Cambodia’s Ecology Program and the Cambodian Youth Network.

To determine forest loss and recovery over the nearly two decade period, the Technical Report on Forest-Cover Change Detection in the Prey Land Protected Area of Cambodia compared satellite images, which showed that 58,138 hectares of forest was converted into plantations and 43,188 hectares became “non-forest.”

The Land Rights Act (LRA), which was passed into law in 2018 by members of the 54th Legislature, will serve as an impetus that will holistically empower women across the country, Cecelia Kuetee, a resident of Nimba County, has said.

Madam Kuetee expressed the hope to see a society where women, who she said have been marginalized, will be empowered, especially with unhindered access to land.

She recently gained access to her father’s land and cocoa farm, but said a robust awareness exercise of the LRA and supporting organizations remain pivotal to achieving her goal.
