Bangladesh Forest Conservation Bill of 2023

Bangladesh, with its new Forest Conservation Bill of 2023, is on the brink of a momentous shift in its forest management practices, with two new laws set to revolutionize the sector. These laws, which will replace the colonial-era Forest Act of 1927, have been hailed as a “paradigm shift” and will have a significant impact on the way forest resources are utilized and protected in the country.

Exploring Secure Tenure in Urban Bangladesh

Adequate, affordable and accessible housing for low-income, informal and slum settlements cannot be discussed or conceptualized in isolation from secure tenure. Doing so reiterates unsustainable development practices and notions that low-income and informal settlements do not have equal rights in terms of where they live. In the absence of an economic and social incentive to invest in improving their living conditions, alongside the threat of routine evictions, low-income communities resort to inexpensive and readily available building materials, which are not resilient or sustainable.

Mainstreaming land rights of the rural poor in the climate discourse: Side event

The aim of this event is increasing public understanding of the links between climate change, disasters, and land tenure rights, and bringing land tenure issues in the climate change discourse, listening particularly to the voices of civil society and youth. The discussion is also expected to bring forth some ideas for action both for the new GFAR Collective Action on land tenure and climate change, and for policy makers.

Enhancing Access to Land Data: The SOLIndex and Open Up Guide

As an advocate for open land data, the Land Portal Foundation aims to improve access to land data, engage stakeholders, and support actions that promote data openness. I recently had the opportunity to introduce the State of Land Information Index (SOLIndex) and talk about the Open Up Guide at the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) Partners’ Meeting in Nairobi and show how these tools play a vital role in improving access to land information.

Uncovering the veiled realities of rural women: a widow’s struggle for land in Amhara Region

With the financial support of GIZ, the Organization for Rehabilitation and Development in Amhara (ORDA) in collaboration with Welthungerhilfe (WHH) has been implementing the Land for Life Amhara Multi-Actor Partnership (MAP) project. The Land for Life Amhara MAP is a coalition of various stakeholders including government, civil society organizations, universities, research institutions and other actors. It aims to provide policy advocacy for a transparent and fair land use and management system, securing user rights and to ensure responsible agricultural investment.

Enhancing agricultural land governance: Training the youth to solve disputes around land-based investments

The GIZ Support to Responsible Agricultural Investment (S2RAI) project initiated a 3-years training on land registration and cadastral surveying for over 45 students from Gambella region at the Assosa Agricultural Technical and Vocational Education Training Center (AATVET) of the neighboring region of Benishangul-Gumuz.
