ORANG Asli from six kampung have formed several blockades in Gua Musang, Kelantan, this morning to protest against the logging activities in the forest reserve which encroach into their land.

Mohd Syafiq Dendi, chairman of the customary land territory in Pos Simpor, said the protesters have set up three blockades at Chawas, Tohoi and Kuala Wok early today.

“The blockades started this morning. This is against logging and commercial farming. 

“They are encroaching into Orang Asli territory. Stop the logging now,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

Indigenous residents say they feel cornered by the developers, with multiple interests fighting over the last undeveloped plot in Brasilia

Brasilia, Feb 6 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - It is one of the most expensive areas in the Brazilian capital - and one of the most sacred. 

A plot in downtown Brasilia - known as Santuário dos Pajés  or Shrine of the Shamans - is at the centre of a conflict between indigenous people hoping to preserve their traditional way of life and developers eager to build an upmarket neighbourhood.

Demolition crews destroy property during Operation Murambatsvina, Zimbabwe

In June 2005, demolition crews destroyed hundreds of homes in an impoverished suburb of Mutare, under ‘Operation Murambatsvina’ (Move the Rubbish), the government of Zimbabwe’s campaign to forcibly clear ‘slums’ across the country. Many of those made homeless joined housing cooperatives to collectively purchase land, on which to rebuild their lives, only to have that land taken by Zanu-PF supporters with backing from government ministers.
