GIZ Knowledge Exchange Workshop 2024 in Senegal Took a Deep Dive on Anchoring Practitioners’ Experience in Responsible Land Governance Systems

As part of its efforts to promote secure land tenure in Africa, three Programmes of German Development Cooperation joined hands and brought together 120 land experts from 17 countries to discuss Responsible Land Governance Systems in Somone, Senegal on 7-11 October 2024. This was the second such workshop after the Knowledge Exchange Workshop in June 2022 in Uganda, entitled "Secure Land Rights – Learning, Collaboration and Practice", and was intended to deepen exchanges as well as share lessons learned.

  • Investment in gender equality is declining and Indigenous and Afro-descendant women's rights organizations are especially marginalized.
  • Between 2016 and 2020, of the $28.5 billion in Official Development Assistance (ODA) Funds designated to support women and girls, only 1.4% went to organizations working with Indigenous women.
  • In 2018-2019, Afro-descendant women, girls and trans people received less than 0.5% of global funding.

The Struggles for Land Podcast gives a voice to those fighting for access to land and defending the commons. Focusing on one major theme per episode, the podcast interviews and brings together farmers' organizations, social movements, environmental protection and the defense of the commons, as well as researchers and consumer associations. These exchanges between actors from the four corners of the globe enable us to better understand the local and international stakes, the successes and the difficulties of these mobilizations, which all have in common that they are working towards a society based on peasant and feminist agriculture in harmony with ecosystems. Land Data Partnership Commits to Promoting FAIR and CARE Data Principles

March 5, 2024 — In 2023, four land-sector organizations came together, with support from the European Commission (EC), to strengthen the central role of data in securing equitable land rights for sustainable development, poverty eradication, peace and the protection of human rights. The EC Land Data Partnership, which includes the International Land Coalition (coordinating the partnership), the Land Portal Foundation, the Land Matrix Initiative, and Prindex, published their Joint Statement of Intention in recognition of International Open Data Day. 

Progressing digitalization in land administration in Ethiopia

A hybrid closing workshop brought together key stakeholders including GIZ-S2RAI, MoA, consultants, the World Bank representatives among others was held in Addis Ababa to mark the closing workshop of the Application Development. The MASSREG Mobile App is believed to help revolutionize the land certification process in Ethiopia by enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and data security.
