The contribution of natural resources to the livelihood strategies of poor people has long been appreciated as significant. How to ensure that poor people have rights and opportunities to access natural resources, as well as responsibilities for the sustainable management of natural resources, has become a central question in debates over poverty alleviation.

A complete 60-page report covering some of the general aspects of natural forests in Rwanda. It is composed of three chapters that cover various topics like mountain forests, relictual areas, savinocol formations, forest plantations, etc. The last part synthesises the country's forest resources and their uses.

Land administration and cadastral systems are playing a crucial global role in safeguarding the security of access to land and natural resources. Information technology systems have become basic elements of these systems everywhere. Introduction of automation to land administration has improved systems’ efficiency, standardisation and accessibility, which in turn have contributed to responsible land governance. Developing country land administrations are, however, often inefficient and poorly structured.

Conflicts over the appropriation, management and use of forest resources can pose significant constraints to sustainable forest management. Often, there are long-standing conflicts between governments, their agencies, the private sector and local communities, as well as among and within communities, over forest resources and their use and control.

L’atelier régional pour l’Afrique francophone du Programme d’Evaluation des Ressources Forestières mondiales s’est tenu à Dakar du 20 au 23 juillet 2004 à l’hôtel Ngor Diarama, à Dakar. Cet atelier fait suite à celui des Correspondants Nationaux à Rome en novembre 2003, atelier consacré à une session d’information et de formation.

El presente nmero de Unasylva se centra en Africa. Gran parte de ese continente ha sido afectado por la sequa durante varios aos consecutivos y millones de personas estn hoy expuestas al hambre y la malnutricin. En muchos pases la agricultura est invadiendo terrenos forestales y zonas de escasas precipitaciones. Este hecho, unido a una explotacin desordenada de la lea, los forrajes y otros bienes y servicios bsicos que pueden obtenerse de los bosques y los rboles, ha provocado una deforestacin cada vez ms rpida.

Through a conceptual analysis based on international treaties and instruments and through two country studies, this study explores the relationship between human rights, particularly the right to adequate food, and access to natural resources with specific focus on land.

An analysis of the present state of forest plantations and of current trends in plantation forestry both on a global basis and region-by-region. Economic and policy considerations in the development of plantation forestry are discussed. The outlook for plantation forestry is then presented in the form of alternative scenarios according to future growth in plantation area.
