This Guidance Note provides guidance for investors and companies on the requirements contained in the IFC Performance Standards for issues linked to involuntary resettlement as part of project-related land acquisition. It offers guidance to minimise adverse impacts on displaced persons and host communities, and to improve the livelihoods of those affected by resettlement.

This guide offers a three-point framework for companies seeking to integrate FPIC principles into their policies and apply them in the operations. This includes

• complying with the requirements for FPIC under international and national law,

• implementing FPIC principles throughout the project life-cycle, and

• extending FPIC processes to all project-affected communities in line with good practice guidance. It also seeks to

• articulate the relevance of FPIC to company policy and practice, and

This Guidance Note provides advice about what is expected in good practice social impact assessment (SIA) and social impact management processes, especially in relation to project development. It provides guidance to help reduce companies' risk exposure and assist them in being compliant with international standards and/or good practice as they evolve over time by addressing significant human rights issues associated with a project.

It provides step by step requirements to ensure that women as well as men are aware of and benefit from a proposed land transaction. This Primer provides practical guidance for companies on how to design, implement, manage, and monitor a company-based grievance mechanism. It is divided into the three main sections and associated steps:

• how to design and implement a company-based grievance mechanism,

• how to create procedures for receiving, investigating, and responding to complaints, and

• how to create procedures for monitoring and evaluating the grievance mechanism.

This primer includes an overview of valuation and compensation best practices that illustrates the relationship between valuation and compensation and other steps and elements of responsible investment. It describes how to develop and implement valuation and compensation practices that lead to fair and adequate compensation to the community and individual land users impacted or displaced by an investment. This Guidance sets out the steps companies involved in minerals supply chains should take to identify and address actual or potential risks in order to prevent or mitigate adverse impacts associated with their activities. It provides guidance on how they can apply due diligence for responsible supply chains of minerals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas as an on-going, proactive and reactive process through which they respect human rights and do not contribute to conflict.

These principles provide guidance on ways to align business objectives with the safeguard of human rights. The principles aim to integrate the management of human rights risks into contract negotiations on investment projects between host State entities and foreign business investors, building on the UN’s Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

This guide provides information for companies in the mining, oil and gas sector - and their consultants - on how to undertake a gender impact assessment to gain and maintain a “social licence to operate” with impacted communities and avoid conflict and costly shut-downs. It

• describes some important principles and approaches that should underpin a gender impact assessment,

• provides a framework for companies to identify, understand and respond to the gender impacts of an extractive industry project, and

• provides recommendations of best practice for how to achieve compliance with these requirements.
