The pastoral systems of Eastern Africa have been affected by the alternated incidence of recurrent drought and flood for the last decades, aggravating poverty and local conflicts. We have introduced an innovation to convert floods to productive use using water spreading weirs (WSW) as an entry point to capture and spread the torrential flood emerging in the neighbouring highlands into rangelands and crop fields of low-lying pastoral systems in Afar, Ethiopia.

The CCAFS-CIAT CSA Prioritization Framework (CSA-PF) is a participatory and multi-criteria decision-making process, co-designed as a holistic tool to support information-based CSA investments. CSA-PF has the objective to help decision-makers identify best-bet CSA investment portfolios that achieve gains in national food and nutrition security, farmers’ resilience and adaptation capacity to climate change, and, where possible, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the food system.

Indonesian forestry challenges in attributional land-use conflicts of overlapping villages and state forests have affected community livelihoods and forest sustainability for decades. This empirical research uncovers the socio-economic attributes of villages in order to gain a better understanding of people−forest relationships in order to guide improved forest management and governance for long-term sustainability. Data were obtained from 69 villages located in the forest management unit of Lakitan Bukit Cogong in South Sumatra Province.

Flood risks are a major concern in Nigeria, due to their consequences on human life and socioeconomic activities of the people. Floods are induced by high rainfall intensity resulting from climate change. As the climate heats up, the water cycle is twisting and contorting, unleashing a torrent of disruptions. More frequent, ferocious floods and droughts, unpredictable downpours, and gnawing erosion are just the tip of the iceberg. Poor water quality, disease outbreaks, and a host of uncertainties are all conspiring to rip apart the delicate web of life that sustains us. Nigeria is recognized as vulnerable to climate change impacts and ranked 160 out of 181 countries due to a combination of political, geographic, and social factors in the 2020 ND-GAIN Indexii .

A living-lab for people (LL4P) has been conceptualized as an inclusive and diverse space to design, test, demonstrate and advance sociotechnical innovations and associated modes of governance. While initially proposed within the innovation and communication technologies (ICT), living-labs (LL) have broadened their scope to sectors such as health, cities, public sector, education, and rural development, and now are seen as methodologies or arenas for innovation in which users or citizens play a central and active role.

In this research, we explored rainfall variability in the Sogamoso River Basin (SRB), its relationship with multiple scales of variability associated with El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and the implications for rainfall prolongation during multiyear La Niña events. First, we examined time-frequency rainfall variations in the SRB based on the standardized precipitation index (SPI) from 1982 to 2019, using wavelet transform and principal component analysis (PCA).

The use of multi-stakeholder forums (MSFs) in territorial planning has gained global popularity. These MSFs aim to bring diverse actors together to collaboratively and equitably develop a plan that assigns optimal land uses to a territory. However, as promoting particular land uses and benefits for some actors often comes at a cost to others, territorial planning MSFs may reproduce or even exacerbate, rather than mitigate, conflicts and asymmetries.

The aim of this report is to analyse the methods and results obtained in relation to the visioning, development of transition pathways and work plans at the ALL in the department of Fatick in Senegal. The latter was chosen because it corresponds to the scale of action of the DYTAEL on the one hand, but also because it was the cradle of the activities of an EU Desira project, called FAIRSAHEL, which has made it possible since the end of 2021 to consolidate thinking on the AE transition in the territory.
