Realized genetic gain in Urochloa hybrids pipeline using ERA trial data

December, 2022
Global

The genetic gain of biomass cover and height in the interspecific Urochloa pipeline was estimated by establishing an ERA trial in two locations in Colombia. Each trial included 150 genotypes from seven cycles of selection in different stages, along with genebank accessions and cultivars. The assessed traits were visual biomass, biomass cover calculated from drone images and height. For the genetic gain estimation, we used a two-stage approach considering only the hybrids in the stage 4, selected after multi location trials in Latin America by the Group Papalotla.

To what extent is REDD + integrated into land-use sectors driving deforestation? Insights from Cameroon

December, 2022
Cameroon

Environmental policies ought to be integrated into economic sectors for successful outcomes. We assess to what extent Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD +) is integrated into land-use sectors driving deforestation in Cameroon. REDD + governance has been extensively examined, including the challenges of a multisectoral approach to tackle the drivers of deforestation, especially those lying outside the forestry sector.

Indigenous Peoples’ lands are threatened by industrial development; conversion risk assessment reveals need to support Indigenous stewardship

December, 2022
Global

Indigenous Peoples are custodians of many of the world’s least-exploited natural areas. These places of local and global socio-ecological importance face significant threats from industrial development expansion, but the risk of conversion of these lands remains unclear. Here we combine global datasets of Indigenous Peoples’ lands, their current ecological condition, and future industrial development pressure to assess conversion threats.

Chapter Three. Conservation agriculture for regenerating soil health and climate change mitigation in smallholder systems of South Asia

December, 2022
Global

The increase in agriculture production to meet the food demand of growing human population from a limited availability of arable land with low environmental footprints and preserving natural resources (soil, water and air) simultaneously are major challenges in South Asia. The situation is further complicated by the climate change, which will further lower the food production, compounding the challenge of meeting food demand.

Assessing the climate security sensitivity of the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion Project (SOCO) in Ghana

December, 2022
Ghana

The CGIAR Climate Security has developed a safeguard programming assessment tool for conflict-sensitive and peace-responsive climate action in agricultural settings. The Climate Security Sensitivity Tool (CSST) is used to evaluate, ex-ante, the extent to which a proposed climate adaptation intervention addresses local drivers of conflict and insecurity and recommends strategies to strengthen their suitability. It seeks to prevent unintended consequences, avoid conflict relapses, and contribute to peacebuilding.
