The present report gives the complete description of the preparation of a land use map and also the preparation of a national map of livestock intensity, needed as LUS input. The present method allows the preparation of a multi-country land use map in two weeks with the work of 13 experts, and is comparable to the continuous of 130 working days. Further to that, the LUS has been validated with the support of GIS consultants.

Accurate and consistent information on forest area and forest area change is important given the reporting requirements for countries to access results based payments for REDD+ . Forest area change estimates usually provide data on the extent of human activity resulting in emissions (e.g. from deforestation) or removals (e.g. from afforestation), also called activity data (AD). A basic methodological approach to estimate greenhouse gas emissions and removals (IPCC, 2003), is to multiply AD with a coefficient that quantifies emissions per unit ‘activity’ (e.g.

Validation and Inter-Comparison of Spaceborne Derived Global and Continental Land Cover Products for the Mediterranean Region: The Case of Thessaly

Peer-reviewed publication
June, 2017

Space agencies, international and national organisations and institutions recognize the importance of regularly updated and homogenized land cover information, in the context of both nomenclature and spatial resolution. Moreover, ensuring credibility to the users through validated products with transparent procedures is similarly of great importance. To this end, this study contributes with a systematic accuracy performance evaluation of continental and global land cover layers. Confidence levels during validation and a weighted accuracy assessment were designed and applied.

Monitoring land use and land cover change using remote sensing, markov analysis, population and landscape metrics analysis : a case study from Çanakkale (1987-2010)

Policy Papers & Briefs
December, 2013
Turkey

Population growth in cities along with migration from rural areas dramatically increases the Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) changes. This study was conducted in Çanakkale province consisting of central part and its vicinities where rapid population growth and development have been taken place. This study aimed to determine LULC changes using remotely sensed data and geographical information system (GIS) techniques between 1987 and 2010.

The need for accurate carbon budgeting, climate change modelling, and sustainable resource management has lead to an increase in the number of large area forest monitoring programs. Large area forest monitoring programs often utilize field and remotely sensed data sources. Sampling, via field or photo plots, enables the collection of data with the desired level of categorical detail in a timely and efficient manner. When sampling, the aim is to collect representative detailed data enabling the statistical reporting upon the characteristics of larger areas.

Land cover mapping of the tropical savanna region in Brazil

Journal Articles & Books
December, 2010
Brazil

The Brazilian tropical savanna (Cerrado), encompassing more than 204 million hectares in the central part of the country, is the second richest biome in Brazil in terms of biodiversity and presents high land use pressure. The objective of this study was to map the land cover of the Cerrado biome based on the segmentation and visual interpretation of 170 Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus satellite scenes acquired in 2002. The following land cover classes were discriminated: grasslands, shrublands, forestlands, croplands, pasturelands, reforestations, urban areas, and mining areas.

Determination of land cover using landsat TM imagery

Turkey

In this study, land cover maps of Bozcaada district were developed using Landsat satellite images obtained in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In addition to original images (6 band Landsat TM), the new images constituted with image processing techniques were also used. A total of ten images were formed by supervised classification method using principal component analysis (PCA), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and tasseled cap (TC) transformation methods.

Analysis of indicators of sustainability of irrigated areas and the Lower Acaraú Curu, located in Ceará

Journal Articles & Books
December, 2010

The study aimed to analyze the performance indicators of self-sustainability, taking into account their potential for production in irrigated areas located in the basin Baixo Acaraú and Curu. The survey is a survey of information available on the perimeters studied by merging the existing bibliographies and materials with statistical data available. We evaluated its performance through the analysis of indicator values for the year 2008, starting at data provided by DNOCS, and the association of irrigation districts of the perimeters.

THE UGANDA NATIONAL LAND POLICY IMPLEMENTATION ACTION PLAN 2015/16 – 2018/19

National Policies
February, 2015
Uganda

The Uganda National Land Policy (NLP) Implementation Action Plan is a deliberate resolution by the Government of Uganda to address major challenges that have hindered the implementation of land reforms, thereby impeding the optimal utilisation of land for socio-economic development and transformation. Although successive post-independence governments have made numerous efforts to streamline land governance and reconfigure the role of land in national development, the majority of these efforts have failed to address underlying issues and have thus remained unimplemented to date.
