L’initiative de Réduction des émissions causées par le déboisement et la dégradation des forêts dans les pays en développement; et rôle de la conservation, de la gestion durable des forêts et du renforcement des stocks de carbone forestiers dans les pays en développement (REDD+) vise à inciter les pays boisés en développement à protéger leurs ressources forestières; elle contribuera ainsi à la lutte mondiale contre les changements climatiques et au développement économique et social durable.

The forest-water nexus is crucial for ensuring water and food security, as well as for achieving sustainable development objectives. Only by recognising the interlinkages of forests and water, and how the management of these resources influences productive multi-functional landscapes can appropriate long-term benefits from landscape planning and management be actualized. And while it is important that generalized assumptions about the forest-water nexus are not widely applied due to their complex and context specific nature, the knowledge is available to lend guidance.

This edition of Unasylva comes in the wake of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20,which, among other things, produced a document called The Future We Want. In it, world leaders renewed their commitment to sustainable development and stated that “the wide range of products and services that forests provide creates opportunities to address many of the most pressing sustainable development challenges”. Foresters should be pleased with these words because they indica te that forests are starting to get the recognition they deserve.

Ghana’s work to promote the legal timber trade, in partnership with the European Union (EU), strongly emphasizes involving local communities who live in or near forests. Yet many farmers and communities don’t understand their rights, which means that illegal activity by loggers has gone unchecked in Ghana’s off-reserve forests.

Le mécanisme de Réduction des émissions causées par le déboisement et la dégradation des forêts dans les pays en développement; et rôle de la conservation, de la gestion durable des forêts et du renforcement des stocks de carbone forestiers dans les pays en développement (REDD+) est un mécanisme international; il vise à inciter les pays à réduire les émissions provenant de leurs forêts en attribuant une valeur financière au carbone stocké dans les forêts.

Pour la première fois, les besoins et les opportunités de restauration des terres dans le cadre de la Grande Muraille Verte africaine ont été cartographiés et quantifiés afin de promouvoir les actions visant à renforcer la résilience des populations et de ces paysages confrontés au changement climatique.

The “Sustainable Land Management and Climate-Friendly Agriculture” Project was implemented in Turkey to improve the sustainability of agricultural and forest land use in the area by rehabilitating degraded forests and rangelands, promoting climate-smart agriculture and establishing a favourable enabling environment. The project was designed to develop the necessary strategies, plans, tools and mechanisms that will aid stakeholders in sustainably managing forest and land resources.

La gestión sostenible de la vida silvestre es objeto de considerable atención en el debate internacional debido a su importancia para la conservación de la biodiversidad, la seguridad humana, los medios de subsistencia y la seguridad alimentaria. Las poblaciones locales han gestionado las especies silvestres durante milenios, incluso a través de la caza. En este número se presentan ejemplos suficientes para demostrar que en la era moderna también es factible la gestión sostenible de la vida silv estre.

Le cadre juridique est le moyen par lequel s’effectue la transposition des exigences internationales découlant de la Convention-cadre des Nations Unies sur les changements climatiques (CCNUCC) en obligations concrètes et précises pour les pays forestiers, et ce, en fonction de leur situation propre.
