The main goal of the proposed project is to increase food and economic household security among Female Living with HIV (PLHIV), Women-led households, Gender-based Violence Survivors, and Young Women. The project proposal will empower 100 beneficiaries (10 cooperative groups of 10 members per group) in central province to engage in profitable and sustainable soya beans and groundnuts farming using good agronomic farming practices, enhanced utilization of climate information services and adoption of climate resilient seed varieties.

The fast-growing palm oil economy has stimulated a significant expansion of oil palm plantations in Indonesia. The uncontrolled development of large oil palm plantations has raised complex socio-ecological issues, including changes of ecological landscapes, organization of production, and farming household livelihood systems. For two oil palm villages with different ecological settings, this article describes changes in land cover, how production is organized, and the income structure changes due to rural economic development.

In 2019, Indonesia has experienced a very recent El Nino event, which generates an impact on the severity of forest and peatland fires both in Kalimantan and Sumatra. Some provinces such as Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Riau, South Sumatra, and Jambi have been covered in a thick and poisonous haze for months. The total number of fire in Central Kalimantan processed from NASA hotspot data from January to October is reaches 10 000, which approximately 86% occur during two months of the dry season (September – October 2019).

Despite the progress made in conceptualizing and advocating for secure community-based land and forest tenure rights, there is a critical lacuna in advocacy and policymaking processes pertaining to community-based freshwater tenure rights. Moreover, water tenure as a concept has only recently gained significant traction in global policy circles. This report analyzes national and international legal pathways for recognizing customary forms of community-based freshwater tenure rights held by Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) in sub-Saharan Africa.

The role of spatial inequalities on youth migration decisions: Empirical evidence from Nigeria

We combine nationally representative data from Nigeria with spatiotemporal data from remote sensing and other sources to study how young migrants respond to observable characteristics of potential destinations, both in absolute terms and relative to origin locations. Migrants prefer destinations with better welfare, land availability and intensity of economic activity. We also find that migrants prefer shorter distances and those destinations with better urban amenities and infrastructure. However, responses vary by type of migrant and migration.

Multi-hazard risk mapping using machine learning

This study maps out Ghana’s multi-hazard risk of flood and drought by using machine learning (ML) models for susceptibility analysis, socioeconomic survey for vulnerability analysis and population density for exposure analysis. The ML models used were Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) with inputs of location and features of natural hazards. Topographic, precipitation, temperature, hydrology, land cover and soil cover raster images were also used in these models.

The high mountains stretch over 20.4% of Nepal’s land surface with diverse climatic conditions and associated vegetation types. An understanding of tree species and forest structural pattern variations across different climatic regions is crucial for mountain ecology. This study strived to carry out a comparative evaluation of species diversity, main stand variables, and canopy cover of forests with contrasting precipitation conditions in the Annapurna range. Firstly, climate data provided by CHELSA version 1.2, were used to identify distinct precipitation regimes.

Joint Impact Assessment of CTA's Support to SPC (2004-2014)
