Increased diversification of rural households into the rural non-farm economy is an important driver of economic growth and structural transformation in countries like Ethiopia where the vast majority of people live in rural areas and are largely dependent on seasonal agriculture. Some of the benefits of diversification include efficient utilization of asset endowments (e.g., labor during dry season) and reduction of risks.

This document presents the market study results to identify relevant information, characteristics, and conditions of an enabling environment for climate resilience financial services in livestock in the Peten, Izabal, Jalapa, Jutiapa, and Santa Rosa departments of Guatemala. It was developed by YAPU Solutions as a consultancy deliverable for the Alliance Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and is part of the Livestock, Climate, and System Resilience initiative of the CGIAR portfolio.

The potential contribution of rural women to climate mitigation by being part of the economic cycle is not sufficiently exploited. Economic empowerment through climate adaptation can foster economic growth, promote socio-economic development, reduce poverty, keep environmental problems in check, and increase potential for adaptation which benefits both men and women (Research Gate). The conservation of small livestock agrobiodiversity while creating value addition economic empowerment has considerable potential for enrichening local food system while conserving animal genetic resources.

Total agrobiodiversity of any area is necessary to plan the implementation of agricultural and environmental projects and activities. Diversity is most for advancing agriculture development, however, modern agriculture has accelerated the replacement of old age crop diversity. Agrobiodiversity index and measures are commonly used and estimated for crop and animal species, landraces and sites. These are useful for locating sites, crops and custodians of agrobiodiversity.

Dairy development is a promising pathway out of poverty for smallholder farmers as demand for animal-sourced foods is projected to rise. Feed is a critically limiting factor in productivity of smallholder dairy systems in East Africa. This study aims to introduce and provide proof-of-concept for a relatively simple approach to quantify feeding systems and feed gaps in data-scarce smallholder systems. Feed gap here is defined as the difference between livestock feed demand for an attainable milk production level (attainable feed demand) and actual feed supply at individual herd level.
