O povo Pataxó vivia tradicionalmente em bandos seminômades, convivendo com outras etnias. A expansão agrícola brasileira os alcançou em vários períodos históricas de forma violenta. Os Pataxó, da Bahía, se mantiveram relativamente isolados da sociedade nacional vivendo no sul da Bahia desde o aldeamento forçado na atual Aldeia de Barra Velha em 1861. Os Pataxó lutam para permanecer neste local.
