Addressing climate change adaptation and mitigation in tropical wetland ecosystems of Indonesia

Policy Papers & Briefs
December, 2011
Indonesia

Tropical wetlands, especially peatlands and mangroves, are important in global carbon cycling. Indonesia has more tropical wetlands than any other country on Earth. - Research that addresses critical information gaps and communicates the results on land use and carbon dynamics in tropical wetlands is needed to inform sound policy decisions. This work can also improve IPCC Guidelines on methodologies for greenhouse gas inventories.

Agroforestry in REDD+: Opportunities and Challenges. ASB Policy Brief 26

Policy Papers & Briefs
December, 2011

Agroforestry and other tree-based systems (wood lots, afforestation) can contribute to Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) in two ways: 1) as part of REDD+ under certain forest definitions; and / or 2) as part of a strategy for achieving REDD+ in landscapes. In the context of REDD+, agroforestry has the potential for reducing degradation by supplying timber and fuelwood that would otherwise be sourced from adjacent or distant forests.

Financing household tree plantations in Vietnam: Current programmes and future options

Journal Articles & Books
December, 2011
Vietnam

Access to external finance critically influences farm households’ ability to establish and manage commercial tree plantations in Vietnam, as it does elsewhere. The Vietnamese government has recognised the importance of household tree plantations and, in particular, the benefits of giving households access to external finance. Not only has the government transferred around a quarter of Vietnam’s forestland to households, but it also offers them exceptional access to financial support through targeted programmes and the state-owned banking system.
