Within the context of RECOFTC’s overall goal to strengthen rights, improve governance and ensure equitable benefits to forest dependent men, women and other excluded groups, RECOFTC has been implementing a Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAO-RAP) funded project entitled “Mainstreaming Gender into Forest Policies”.

I am very glad to have this opportunity to be at the World Forestry Congress.

My name is Theya Chaw from Layshi township, Khantee district, Sagaing region of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. I am from the Naga ethnic group, and come from a remote area near the tri-junction of India, China and Myanmar.

Where I come from, land is divided and ruled according to our local ancestral customs, and traditionally managed without the main purpose of forest  conservation. In the past, local communities made their living through Taung-ya or shifting cultivation.

Background

This publication provides practical and evidence-based guidance on how to improve women’s access to land as an essential element to achieve social and economic development and enjoyment of human rights, peace and stability in the specific context of the Muslim world. The challenges faced by women living in Muslim contexts do not substantially differ from those faced by women in other parts of the world: socially prescribed gender roles, unequal power dynamics, discriminatory family practices, unequal access to justice are the most common.

Mokoro’s practical and action-oriented long-term strategic research project, the Women’s Land Tenure Security Project (WOLTS), is piloting its methodology through a ‘Study on the threats to women’s land tenure security in Mongolia and Tanzania’.

Kenya is the most recent African state to acknowledge customary tenure as producing lawful property rights, not merely rights of occupation and use on government or public lands. This paper researches this new legal environment. This promises land security for 6 to 10 million Kenyans, most of who are members of pastoral or other poorer rural communities. Analysis is prefaced with substantial background on legal trends continentally, but the focus is on Kenya’s Community Land Act, 2016, as the framework through which customary holdings are to be identified and registered.

Este estudo tem como objetivo discutir a violência contra a mulher entre moradoras de um assentamento rural de reforma agrária, as peculiaridades da violência, bem como as formas de suporte e apoio social. A violência contra a mulher constitui um problema de saúde pública, agravando-se no contexto rural, o qual é organizado segundo uma divisão tradicional de papéis de gênero. Trata-se de um estudo com abordagem qualitativa e como ferramenta se utilizou a entrevista semiestruturada. Participaram da pesquisa 9 mulheres maiores de 18 anos moradoras de um assentamento rural.

As reflexões e discussões contidas neste artigo são oriundas de ações realizadas no projeto “Interface entre extensão e pesquisa no acompanhamento de empreendimentos econômicos e solidários em comunidades tradicionais e áreas de quilombo no território da Cidadania na Baixada Cuiabana MT”.

In an inclusive society, all women would have equal opportunities as men to participate socially, politically and economically. They would be valued and recognised as individuals in their own right and not primarily defi ned by their marital and reproductive status. Has this been achieved in Singapore? Contrary to common belief, the nation still has some ways to go in this regard, for signifi cant groups of women in Singapore continue to be marginalised and disadvantaged.
