The FAO Legal Office provides in-house counsel in accordance with the Basic Texts of the Organization, gives legal advisory services to FAO members, assists in the formulation of treaties on food and agriculture, for which the Director-General acts as Depositary, publishes legal studies and maintains a database (FAOLEX) of national legislation and international agreements concerning food and agriculture (including fisheries, forestry and water).

Presidential Decree No. 2144 regarding federal natural resources.

The President decrees, in accordance with the legislation currently in force, to introduce the differentiation of the state property on natural resources by designation of federal natural resources. Federal natural resources include land, water, forest, subsoil, wildlife species and plant variety of national importance.

Implemented by: Presidential Decree No.1470 of 1994 regarding natural resources of the sea-coast of the Black sea and the Sea of Azov. (1996-03-01)

Law No. 3573 on olive improvement and grafting of wild species.

The objective of this Law which includes 25 articles and 2 supplementary articles is to define the procedure for olive improvement efforts. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs is the leading agency for establishing, sowing, grafting and establishing gardens for wild species. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs provides land to those who would apply for olive sowing. Seeds will also be provided by the Government on cost basis. These land will be permanently transferred to those who have engaged in olive planting for five years.

This Regulation (consisting of 20 articles) establishes non-agricultural use of agricultural areas. Allocation of any land other than settlement areas for non-agricultural use is subject to consent of the General Directorate of Rural Services. Class I and Class II agricultural lands can not be used for any other purposes. Also lands that are classified as Class III and Class IV due to insufficient drainage and salinity, but that could be converted in to Class I and Class II by improving can not be used for non-agricultural purposes.
