Insecurity over land ownership in Rwanda was a critical part of the tension between communities. Addressing insecurity around land has consequently been one of the foremost priorities of the post-conflict reforms initiated in Rwanda following the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Rwanda set out to address the issue of land ownership and land-related challenges through passage of several laws and policies.

Umoja (noun):/ooh-moh-jah/Umoja, is the Swahili philosophy of unity. Its principles underscore the significance of cooperation and communal solidarity. Umoja has historically been associated with various aspects of African social and political life, accentuating the influence of communal synergy in traditional land tenure systems.

ABSTRACT Amuru district in northern Uganda has had intense land rights violations over the past fourteen years. There have been large scale land investments for commercial agriculture and other activities with limited community engagement, In many families men have sold off family land to ‘investors’ without consultation of their wives.

The Twenty-first century has witnessed change in the nature, dimension and dynamics of gender role and relationship. Soil salinity being a problem of irrigated agriculture reduces the productivity of agricultural land adversely. Detection of soil salinity by conventional means of soil survey requires a great deal of time, but remote sensing data and GIS techniques minimize time consuming and offer the possibility for monitoring and mapping salt affected land. This study assessed and digitally mapped out soil salinity level in Kampe – Omi between the periods of 10 years (2005 - 2014). Women make essential contributions to agriculture by playing a large role in food crop production. They require land as source of rural livelihood and monetary strengthening through land right security. Women’s ownership of land and property can be potentially transformative, not only as a store of value, but also as a means of acquiring other assets and engaging in a range of markets. However, women have lower access to productive resources (land and capital) compared to their male counterparts.

Context and background:Reconciling the sectoral interests of urban planning and agriculture is a challenge. The idyllic ambition to plan the city while enhancing agricultural land through a planning tool is subject to conflicts of use and divergent stakeholder logics.Goal and objectives:This study highlights the problem of conflicts between urban planning and agricultural land. The aim is to identify ways of objectifying and rationalizing the planning process in order to regulate these conflicts.
