Who has the better story? On the narrative foundations of agricultural development dichotomies

December, 2019
Global

While there is consensus on the need to promote agricultural development in Africa to achieve food security and use agriculture as an engine of growth, there is a lively policy debate on appropriate policies to achieve this goal. In the past two decades, there has been a revival of policies that favor government support to agriculture in Africa, especially in the form of input subsidies.

Maize production under combined conservation agriculture and integrated soil fertility management in the sub-humid and semi-arid regions of Kenya

December, 2019
Kenya

Crop production in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is constrained by rainfall variability and declining soil fertility. This has over time led to a decrease in crop yield, among them also maize. This decrease is also experienced in the sub-humid and semi-arid locations of Kenya. Among the commonly used soil and water management practices in SSA are Conservation Agriculture (CA) and integrated soil fertility management (ISFM). Crop response to these management practices is influenced by the existence of soil fertility gradients which are common among smallholder farmers.

Integrated aquaculture-agriculture: Fish culture and plant crops module for arid areas

December, 2022
Malaysia

This guide explains the integration between fish culture and conventional crop agriculture and discusses
how farmers can maximize benefits from using these resources. The main concept for any system of
integration is that the outputs of one organism or system function as a source of inputs for another
organism or system. For fish farmers, this concept applies to the relationship between fish and crops, as theoutputs of the fish can be a rich source of nutrients for crops.

Training on ANACIM Data and Maproom Tools Relevant to AICCRA

December, 2020
Global

This report summarizes a workshop, which was held in Dakar on 10 November 2021, that introduced AICCRA-Senegal partners to Climate Maprooms, data, and other relevant tools and platforms that are available through ANACIM. Presentations covered ANACIM products and strategy for agriculture and related sectors, the ENACTS approach to strengthening national capacity to provide locally actionable climate information, and analyses of the quality of ANACIM’s gridded historical data that serve as a foundation for localized climate information products.

CCARDESA Agribusiness and Gender and Youth Responsive Food Systems

December, 2022
Global

The Centre for Coordination of Agricultural Research and Development for Southern Africa
(CCARDESA) is a SADC subsidiary mandated by Members States to coordinate regional cooperation
in agricultural research and development. It is implementing the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture
Development Programme EX Pillar 4 (CAADP-XP4) Programme on Gender. The CAADP-XP4
Programme is financed through the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) for four
years, between 2019-2023.

Gender norms and differences in access and use of climate-smart agricultural technology in Burundi

December, 2022
Burundi

The adoption and use of climate-smart agricultural practices are critical for improving the productivity and sustainability of smallholder farming systems. However, the gendered dimensions of access to and use of climate-smart agriculture in common bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) production remain unexplored among smallholder farmers in Burundi. A mixed methods research design was employed to investigate gender dynamics in common bean production among smallholder common bean farmers in the communes of Kirundo, Bwambarangwe, and Muyinga in Burundi.

Global hotspots of climate change adaptation and mitigation in agriculture

December, 2022
Global

As countries prioritize climate action under the Paris Agreement, determining the overlap in agricultural areas requiring both adaptation and mitigation (A&M) interventions could lead to more efficient use of resources and support for farmers. Here, we identify global priorities for A&M by evaluating global datasets on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate hazards related to agriculture. We show that joint A&M hotspots cover <23% of global agricultural emissions and include 52% of the areas with significant climate hazards.

PROTOCOL: Interventions promoting resilience through climate-smart agricultural practices for women farmers: A systematic review

December, 2021
Global

This is the protocol for a Campbell systematic review. The objectives are as follows:
the primary objective of this review is to synthesise evidence of the effectiveness of
interventions to promote climate‐smart agriculture to enhance agricultural outcomes
and resilience of women farmers in low‐and‐middle‐income countries (research
question 1). The secondary objective is to examine evidence along the causal
pathway from access to interventions to promote climate‐smart agriculture to

Participatory climate risk mapping: Building local adaptation capacities. A case from Ivisan , Capiz , Philippines

December, 2019
Philippines

The report discussed how the local government unit in Ivisan municipality, Capiz, Philippines coped with, mitigated, and prepared for climate related risks in the livelihood and agri fisheries sector. The goal of the research was to produce Climate Related Risk Maps and Adaptation Plans in agriculture (Climate Smart MAP/CS MAP) for the 15 villages of Ivisan. The maps will assist in decision making and planning for risks, in normal and severe years, on a long term basis.

Creating climate-smart multi-functional landscapes through integrated soil, land and water management practices and contextualized agroadvisory services at different scales in Ethiopia

December, 2019
Ethiopia

Experiences show that integrating restoration efforts at landscape level need to be coupled with intensification efforts at farm/plot level to promote synergy and attain multiple benefits. The approaches followed in the creation of multifunctional landscapes are designed to enable achieving this goal. This report presents project activities and outputs related to approaches, implementation modalities and evidence generation exercises from ‘learning’ and upscaling sites.

Climate Risk Management in Agricultural Extension (CRMAE) for Ethiopia’s Agricultural Technical Vocational Education and Training (ATVET) Program

December, 2021
Global

A two-day consultative workshop was implemented from March 14-15, 2022, in Bishoftu, Ethiopia by the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) of the Columbia Climate School.

From policy promises to result through innovation in African agriculture?

December, 2020
Global

The problem addressed in this paper is the challenge of moving from formulating policy goals to achieving the promised results. The purpose is to assess the possible role of innovation in agriculture as a way of contributing towards achieving the Malabo Declaration commitments and the zero hunger Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2) in six African countries. Since the SDGs are high on both international and many national agendas, there is a need to increase our knowledge of how to move beyond formulating goals.
