The economywide impacts of increasing water security through policies on agricultural production: The case of rice and sugarcane in Pakistan

December, 2022
Pakistan

Increasing demand for water juxtaposed with shrinking supplies will require a transfer of water resources out of agriculture into the domestic, industrial, and ideally environmental sectors. To examine the potential of policies to facilitate a release of water from agriculture, this paper uses IFPRI’s Computable General Equilibrium Model with a water extension, CGE-W, to assess the impact of commodity taxes on two highly water consumptive crops, rice and sugarcane, on water consumption and the overall economy.

Approaches through which anticipation informs climate governance in South Asia

December, 2020
Netherlands

This report presents the RE-IMAGINE research in one of its four regions: South Asia. RE-IMAGINE builds on climate foresight expertise of the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) Program and analyses the role of foresight in climate governance across the globe. Scenarios and many other methods and tools are used today to imagine climate futures and develop strategies for realizing new futures while governing climate change.

Toward a digital One CGIAR: Strategic research on digital transformation in food, land, and water systems in a climate crisis

December, 2020
Global

The global research consortium CGIAR is restructuring itself to build a more integrated global organization (“One CGIAR”) that fully leverages its strengths and refocuses its research strategy through 2030 in service of a renewed mission: End hunger—through science to transform food, land, and water systems in a climate crisis.

Small-scale farming, gender relations and resource allocation: Barriers to adoption of nature-positive solutions in Western Kenya

December, 2022
Global

The agricultural sector is a key driver of climate change and biodiversity loss and is in urgent
need for transition. NATURE+, a large-scale CGIAR agricultural development initiative, aims
to support small-holder farmers in shifting agrifood systems to more sustainable pathways by
adopting nature-positive solutions. With gender equality at its core, it is crucial to enhance
women’s opportunities and to identify any barriers to the adoption of nature-positive practices.

An Assessment of Inclusion in the Governance of Bangladesh’s Agri-Food System to Face Climate Crisis

December, 2022
Global

This exploratory study relied on secondary data review relating to inclusive governance in agri-food systems, as well as an analysis of Bangladesh’s contemporary agriculture, food systems, climate change, conservation, and natural resource management policies and interventions. Based on the literature review, key practices/initiatives were mapped against an analytical framework consisting of seven dimensions of inclusive governance, namely representation, participation, capacity and skills, accessibility, financial resources, knowledge system, and innovation.

Life history, uses, trade and management of Diospyros crassiflora Hiern, the ebony tree of the central African forests: a state of knowledge

December, 2020
Global

The Central African forest ebony, Diospyros crassiflora Hiern, is a small tree native to the moist forests of the Congo Basin. Its appealing black heartwood was one of the first products to be exported from the Gulf of Guinea in the 17th century and is today one of the main sources of ebony globally. Like for other ebony species, its commercial exploitation raises serious questions about the long-term sustainability of its trade and the viability of its populations, but the dots are yet to be joined.

Compendium of Climate-smart Agriculture Technologies and Practices

December, 2019
Nepal

Nepal is a vulnerable country to the impacts of climate change. The adverse effects of climate change have decreased agricultural production and productivity. Therefore, technologies and strategies to develop resilience agriculture and increased agriculture productivity are urgently needed to create climate-smart technologies and help the existing technologies to adapt to climate change.

Functional diversity of soil nematodes in relation to the impact of agriculture - a review

December, 2020
Global

The analysis of the functional diversity of soil nematodes requires detailed knowledge on theoretical aspects of the biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationship in natural and managed terrestrial ecosystems. Basic approaches applied are reviewed, focusing on the impact and value of soil nematode diversity in crop production and on the most consistent external drivers affecting their stability.

December, 2022
Global

This report provides an update on the status, as of December 31, 2022, of the plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) collections maintained by the eleven CGIAR Centers that signed Article 15 agreements with the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Plant Treaty) in 2006.

Training of Trainers on Enhancing Forecasting Capacities And Crop Capability Prediction Model/Tool

December, 2022
Global

The negative impact of hydro-meteorological hazards on agricultural sector oftentimes leads to food insecurity, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It is, therefore, incumbent upon policymakers to formulate appropriate strategies that aimed at minimizing the effects of hydro-meteorological hazards on communities and the economies. Therefore, there is a need for availability of timely and tailored climaterelated knowledge, information and products that support decision making in an effort to reduce climaterelated losses and enhance benefits.

Impact Investment in Agriculture in Africa: A Case study of Ethiopia, Sudan, Mali, and Senegal

December, 2021

Climate change is a growing threat to agricultural production in sub-Saharan Africa, leading to rising poverty and malnutrition. Implementing climate smart agricultural practices at scale will require substantial investments from private and public actors. To understand the impacts of recent investments, challenges and perspectives, this study analyzes agricultural value chain investments in four African countries in the Sahel region: Senegal, Mali, Ethiopia, and Sudan.
