Environmental flows in support of sustainable intensification of agriculture in the Letaba River Basin, South Africa

December, 2022
South Africa

This study evaluates the socioecological consequences of the potential trade-offs between maintaining environmental flows (e-flows) and providing water for sustainable subsistence agriculture and livelihoods to the vulnerable human communities living along the lower Great Letaba River in South Africa. Implementation of e-flows is now generally recognized as an essential part of water resources management as they are designed to ensure that sufficient water is retained in a river to protect river ecosystems and all the beneficiaries of services that arise from those ecosystems.

Translating complex climate science into practical agro-climate advisories for 13-15 million smallholder farmers in Ethiopia

December, 2019
Ethiopia

Creation of Ethiopia’s digital agro-climate advisory platform, a collaborative partnership between government institutions and CGIAR centers, represents a breakthrough in providing climate-information and timely decision-support tools to smallholder farmers to strengthen adaptive capacity and resilience. Partnership between Ministry of Agriculture and EDACaP team with Ethiopia’s FANA Broadcasting Corporate led to dissemination of agro-climate messages to 13-15 million smallholder farmers across FANA’s 11 regional broadcasting centers in Ethiopia.

December, 2022
Global

This Labor Management Procedures (LMP) has been updated for the Additional Financing (AF) of the Accelerating Impact of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project (P181150). This updated LMP will be used for the Parent Project (P173398) and the AF (P181150). The International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) has revised this LMP to guide mitigation and response to key labor and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) risks envisaged on AICCRA-AF.

The fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources is one of the three objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); while under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and agriculture (ITPGRFA) Article 9.2b addresses the right to equitably participate in sharing benefits arising from the utilization of PGRFA. Benefits may include monetary and non-monetary benefits, including but not limited to those listed in the Annex of
the Nagoya Protocol.

Policy incentives for smallholder adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices

December, 2022
Global

There is a large and growing literature on the potential use of policy instruments for stimulating the adoption of Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices amongst smallholders. The objective of this article is to review and understand how the array of potential policy incentives can serve as mechanisms for enhancing adoption and upscaling of potential CSA practices by small-scale farmers in low-income countries. The review follows a matrix approach capturing where specific CSA practices (rows) are supported by typical policy instruments (columns) for enhancing widespread adoption.

Kenya County Climate Risk Profile: Migori County

December, 2020
Kenya

County Climate Risk Profiles are a key tool to guide climate smart agriculture (CSA) investments and priorities at the county level in Kenya. These documents provide analyses of the underlying causes of vulnerability and on-going and potential climate change adaptation strategies. They also provide a snapshot of the enabling environment for building resilience by providing a synthesis of the policy, institutional and governance context.

Decision Support Tools (DST) - application in policy, planning and implementation

December, 2022
Global

These training slides, form part of the training delivered to the Africa Group of Negotiators Expert Support Group (AGNES) Climate Leadership Programme. The materials explore the impacts of decision making and introduce the key concepts as well as an overview of decision support tools and the basics of data visualisation. The training delves into the importance of user testing and accessing decision support tools and how critical evidence is for police processes, as explained through the example of climate-smart agriculture investment plans.

The economywide impacts of increasing water security through policies on agricultural production: The case of rice and sugarcane in Pakistan

December, 2022
Pakistan

Increasing demand for water juxtaposed with shrinking supplies will require a transfer of water resources out of agriculture into the domestic, industrial, and ideally environmental sectors. To examine the potential of policies to facilitate a release of water from agriculture, this paper uses IFPRI’s Computable General Equilibrium Model with a water extension, CGE-W, to assess the impact of commodity taxes on two highly water consumptive crops, rice and sugarcane, on water consumption and the overall economy.
