Transboundary River Basin Overview – Euphrates-Tigris

This river basin overview describes the state of the water resources and water use, as well as the state of agricultural water management in the Euphrates-Tigris basin. The aim of this report is to describe the particularities of this transboundary river basin and the problems met in the development of the water resources, and irrigation in particular. Irrigation trends, existing policies and legislation to water use in agriculture, possible treaties and agreements between countries as well as prospects for water management in agriculture are presented, as described in literature.

FAO's AQUASTAT programme, initiated in 1993, aims to meet the demand for information on water resources and use at regional level, with particular emphasis on irrigation and drainage. The objectives of the programme are to collect and present, in a systematic way, data on rural water use at country level.

With an area of more than 22 million km², the former Soviet Union (FSU) covers about 17% of the world and presents a wide range of climatic and physiographic situations, from the arctic zones of Siberia to the arid deserts of Central Asia.

Cooperation between Tajikistan and FAO has been ongoing since the country joined the Organization in 1995. FAO

assistance was initially provided in the form of short-term emergency interventions in response to a locust outbreak and

also to help the transition to stability after a period of civil war. More recently, cooperation has focused on rehabilitation

and development interventions to build a sustainable agriculture sector and food and nutrition security.

Poland was one of the 44 founding members of FAO, participating in the Hot Spring Conference in 1943 as well as in the FAO founding conference in Quebec City on 16 October 1945. FAO’s shared history of cooperation with the Government of Poland has focused on projects that improve the safety and efficiency of the Polish food system. In recent years, Poland has transitioned from a recipient to a donor country, recently funding an FAO study on best practices for emergency preparedness.

agriculture sector, including rural development. Cooperation has been in line with the country’s successive national

frameworks, including most recently the 7th National Development Plan, aimed at achieving the Vision 2030 objective of

transforming Zambia into a middle-income country by 2030.
