The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and FAO have a significant history of cooperation. For more than 50 years, FAO assistance has spanned the full spectrum of agricultural and rural development, with interventions carefully selected to meet top priority areas identified by the country and its regional setting. Some notable features of cooperation include the formulation of policy and regulatory frameworks, including national capacity development, and technical assistance to high-value horticulture.

The two waves of refugees from the Central African Republic has provoked one of the most severe humanitarian crises in Central Africa and in the South of Chad. The different camps around the city of Goré host a population of more than 90 000 individuals of which 35% are refugees, 21% are repatriates and 44% are autochthones. This population is dependent on woodfuel for cooking, heating and lighting. This has increased pressure on the environment due to tree felling, wood collection and the conversion of forestland to agricultural land.

This country profile describes the state of the water resources and water use, as well as the state of agricultural water management in Azerbaijan. The aim of this report is to describe the particularities of the country and the problems met in the development of the water resources, and irrigation in particular. Irrigation trends, existing policies and legislation to water use in agriculture, possible treaties and agreements between countries as well as prospects for water management in agriculture are presented, as described in literature.

Zimbabwe and FAO have partnered in development since the country joined the Organization in 1981. Cooperation

has grown in recent years, with interventions ranging from capacity development at the institutional level as well as

for extension staff and farmers to the creation of market linkages and a conducive policy environment. In providing

assistance, FAO focuses on improving income opportunities, strengthening food and nutrition security, and developing

sound policies across agriculture-related sectors, including forestry and fisheries.

Angola and FAO have engaged in close cooperation since the country joined the Organization in

1977. Owing to the 27-year civil war, early FAO interventions were focused on emergency assistance,

including resettling of vulnerable rural households and the provision of agricultural inputs for the

The FAO Country Representation in Yemen opened in 1990. Since then, FAO has provided support to farmers, herders, and

fishers and supported the improvement of agricultural production and productivity in the country. FAO is also working with

Sound information on water vailability and use is key to shaping water policies that aim to provide equitable and sustainable use of increasingly scarce water resources. Accurate information on agricultural water withdrawal is particularly important to planners and decision-makers involved in water management, as agriculture represents the largest water us er in many countries, representing about 70 percent of total withdrawal worldwide.

Canada has long been an active and generous resource partner, working closely with FAO in support of a wide range of shared food security and agricultural development goals. Mutual priority themes include child and maternal nutrition, land tenure and resilience building – with much of Canada’s recent cooperation with FAO having been in response to emergencies where host governments have prioritized FAO’s recovery projects. Canadian expertise and staffing resources are also an important asset for FAO.
