The CGIAR Research Initiative on Climate Resilience (ClimBeR) addresses critical challenges smallholder farmers face in Senegal and similar regions due to climate change. The collaboration with the National Agricultural Insurance Company (CNAAS) to promote the uptake of agricultural insurance, particularly index-based insurance, is a noteworthy strategy.

The new Kenyan government faces a complex domestic and global environment, and it is widely expected to address key food and agricultural challenges with a new set of policies and programs. This policy brief presents key recommendations from a forthcoming book, Food Systems Transformation in Kenya: Lessons from the Past and Policy Options for the Future, which provides research-based “food for thought and action” to support the Kenyan government’s efforts to improve food security.

With the ever-increasing rates of malnutrition, both overnutrition and undernutrition, improving agricultural and consumption practices globally plays a critical role in supporting sustainable diets.

This book has adopted a food systems framework as a new way of conceptualizing and designing food policies and research. Looking beyond agriculture and value chains makes it possible not only to turn food systems into a driver of economic transformation but also to better include health, productivity, resilience, inclusivity, and sustainability as integral parts of system transformation. Such a fresh approach is urgently needed in light of limited development progress over the past years in Kenya and other countries.

The presentation delves into the multifaceted issues surrounding silvopasture degradation. It investigates the root causes, with a spotlight on the adverse impacts of climate change, improper grazing practices, and encroachment of agricultural activities. Silvopastoral systems, as a subset of agroforestry, strategically integrate woody perennials, forages, and livestock to enhance agricultural production and environmental services.

This paper aligns current thinking on transboundary climate risk pathways with research on climate risk for pastoralists in African rangelands. Four pathways for transboundary transmission of climate risk were used as a framework for a narrative review of research literature on pastoralism and climate change. Selected cases were presented to highlight conclusions and recommendations. Pastoralism research reflects many aspects of risk management, particularly its relationship to mobility and the development of appropriate non-equilibrium models of pastoralist decision-making.

Women are vulnerable to adverse climate change impacts and their active involvement and decision-making in
the climate change and agrifood governance is limited, especially in the Global South. New research based on a
strategic review of literature conducted as part of CGIAR research initiative HER+: Harnessing gender and social
equality for resilience in agrifood systems indicate that public policies are vital instruments towards improving
women’s participation in climate change governance and enhancing their resilience.

This study was conducted through the CGIAR Asian Mega -Deltas (AMD) initiative, a multi -year research program to secure food systems of the Mekong Delta, Irrawaddy Delta, and the Ganges Delta for climate and livelihood resilience. The study contributes to Work Package 3 (WP 3) on derisking delta orientated value chains through bundled digital climate advisory services (DCAS+), and focuses on Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. DCAS comprise mobile phones, digital platforms, radio, and TV, as well as digitally enabled services such as extension services and printed bulletins.

Germplasm exchange from international genebanks and breeding programs is vital for successful crop improvement programs. More than 10,000 different accessions of wheat, barley, lentil, faba bean, chickpea, grasspea, and pasture and forage crops are distributed by the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) every year to around 70 countries. New accessions are added to the germplasm collections in the Center's genebank and utilized in the breeding programs.

The theory of change depends on all work being done within partnerships, particularly with
national research and extension systems(NARES) and with small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
active in the national breeding and seed sectors. A core focus is to raise the NARES-CGIAR-SME
breeding networks’ collective strategic and operational capacity to deliver a high rate of uptake
and replacement in seed varieties among small-scale farmers in low- and medium- income
countries.
