Preparation of soil map using remote sensing and GIS technology

Journal Articles & Books
December, 2014

For efficient utilization of soil and water resources, reconnaissance survey of watershed Godavari valley-5 (GV-5) was carried out in Nashik Soil Survey unit No. 2 for providing comprehensive information characteristics. Representative soil samples from each of eight villages of the sub-catchments of Gangapur were collected. From the record of the area sampled, a sample sketch map for reference was made with the help of magnetic needle. Simultaneously, GPS data was recorded for transferring these points on map/satellite image.

Interpretation of characteristics of the land use change based on chronological satellite imageries of kharga oasis, western desert, Egypt

Egypt

Since the 1990s, the Egyptian government has embarked on two national projects on settlement and agricultural development in the Western desert in preparation for expected future population growth. One of them is the Toshka irrigation project, which carries water from Lake Nasser through the depression of El Kharga towards Farafra Oasis. Another is the East Oweinat project, which has enlarged agricultural land in the south of the Western desert by developing water resources from underground aquifers of Nubian sandstone.

Spatial-time transformation of organogenic soils of agricultural lands of Belarus

Journal Articles & Books
April, 2016
Belarus

The first changes of drained peat soils on the territory of the Republic of Belarus appeared after hydro technical amelioration in 60-70s of XX century. Nowadays the process of transformation of component composition of soil cover of old-reclaimed soils and increase of degradation of peat soil is going on. The paper demonstrates the results of systematization and generalization of the materials appropriate to the completion of soil-cartographic works on the drained and adjacent lands of agricultural organizations of the republic.

A case study in upper Citarum River basinEffect of land use change driven by economic growth on sedimentation in river reach in Southeast Asia

Journal Articles & Books

Indonesia

The recent rapid population and economic growth in Southeast Asia has brought about drastic socio-economic changes, such as urbanization and an agricultural shift. Urbanization consists of concentrating a population from a rural to an urban area and expanding urban areas, which pushes farmland outward. The current development diagram generates and accumulates disaster risk as an extensive risk; however, the relationship between developmental progress and the increase in disaster risk must be determined for sustainable development to be achieved.

Winter wheat growth monitoring using multi-temporal TerraSAR-X dual-polarimetric data

Journal Articles & Books
October, 2014
Japan

This paper describes a method for monitoring winter wheat growth using multi-temporal TerraSAR-X dual-polarimetric data. Six TerraSAR-X HH/VV images were collected in Hokkaido, and the temporal responses to the winter wheat fields were analyzed. The height, moisture content and dry matter of the crops were measured at nearly the same time as TerraSAR-X data was acquired, and the relationships between these parameters and SAR data, including sigma naught and coherence, were studied. Quadratic relationships between the crop height and sigma naught were observed for HH polarization.

Application of multi-temporal TerraSAR-X data to map winter wheat planted areas in Hokkaido, Japan

Japan

Winter wheat is an important crop for many countries, and monitoring of its planted area is considered important. Optical sensors have been used to monitor agricultural land, and have shown good classification and monitoring capabilities. However, observations using optical sensors sometimes suffer from interference due to cloud cover or rain. In contrast, synthetic aperture radars (SAR) can be used for Earth observation even under rainy, cloudy or dark conditions, hence SAR is expected to be effective in monitoring agricultural fields and identifying winter wheat fields.

The experience of application of space images for creation of the land use map of irrigated lands and laylands of Svetloyarsk irrigation system

Journal Articles & Books

Russia

The experience of space images use for creation of land use map for the terriotory of the Svetloyar irrigation system and neighboring households is considered. The investigation territory is located in the north-west area on the right bank part of Kaspian lowland (Volgograd region). The land use map reflects the actual conditions of the object and contains the information about the fields under different crops and mixed-age laylands.

Considerations on the public availability and application of time-series land use data of the Tohoku tsunami damage regions

Journal Articles & Books
March, 2015
Japan

The Japanese public now has access to vast amounts of geographical information produced by many government agencies and media outlets on the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Many maps and images not only inform the public about the tsunami damage area, but potentially help the public and policy makers understand the landscape damaged by the tsunami, and plan reconstruction. However, large amounts of publically available data still remain underutilized.
