The “Sustainable Land Management and Climate-Friendly Agriculture” Project was implemented in Turkey to improve the sustainability of agricultural and forest land use in the area by rehabilitating degraded forests and rangelands, promoting climate-smart agriculture and establishing a favourable enabling environment. The project was designed to develop the necessary strategies, plans, tools and mechanisms that will aid stakeholders in sustainably managing forest and land resources.

La dificultad de definir y cuantificar la degradación de bosques es una limitación importante para que la mayoría de los países en desarrollo incluyan compromisos de reducción de emisiones por degradación en el contexto del enfoque de Reducción de Emisiones por Deforestación y Degradación de Bosques (REDD+), que abarca además, el aumento de las Reservas de Carbono, la conservación de Bosques y el Manejo Sostenible de los estos ecosisetemas.

Il était donc opportun de rechercher le meilleur moyen de permettre à un tel mode de gestion d’exprimer son plein potentiel.

The Mediterranean region has more than 25 million hectares of Mediterranean forests and about 50 million hectares of other Mediterranean wooded lands. They make crucial contributions to rural development, poverty alleviation, food security, as well as, the agricultural, water, tourism, and energy sectors. Forests, trees and woodlands cover almost one-third of the Earth’s land area. They are a crucial source of food and income for more than a billion people around the globe. They provide a variety of wood and non-wood products and vital ecosystem services – preventing erosion from wind and water, preserving water quality, shading crops and livestock, absorbing carbon which contributes to countering climate change, and providing habitat for many species of plants and animals, thus helping to conserve the planet’s biological diversity.

In this 2012 edition of Moving Forward, FAO Forestry is pleased to present a selection of the work it undertook in the 2010-2011 biennium for the benefit of the global forestry community. The FAO Forestry Programme encompasses a vast range of activities and projects, of which this booklet presents only a sample. In all regions of the world, the Programme is helping to implement sustainable forest management and boost the livelihoods of forest-dependent people.
