Land corruption – corrupt practices in the land sector – threatens the lives and livelihoods of people and communities, the environment and climate, food security and political stability. Its impacts are particularly acute for 2.5 billion people who live on and from the land. Addressing it requires a dedicated focus and assessment of land related institutions across different national contexts.

Land laws provide a legal basis for addressing a country’s land-related strategies and are the central land policy instruments through which governments realise land policy objectives. Considering their vital role, it is imperative that land laws be evaluated to ensure that policy objectives are followed and that the laws are not ineffective or counterproductive. The extant literature, however, provides only a fragmentary basis for evaluation.

Customary land institutions (CLIs) are social institutions that define local land governance in communities. Strengthening community rights continues to be an essential land policy goal, and several studies have focused on ways to improve local land governance through CLIs. Relatively limited attention, however, has been paid to understanding these institutions in themselves.

Through these pillars, we've expanded our global database of land and property rights programs, enhanced land governance data management, supported data literacy and advocacy, and facilitated critical debates on land governance issues.

This is the dataset from 26.03.2024 of Land Portal's Projects Database - a dataset curated by the Land Portal's team. The dataset includes information about +3,800 development projects with objectives related to land governance. Most of the projects have been sourced from the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI), and some have been provided directly by donor or implementing organizations.
