Land tenure working paper 5. This paper explores trends of good governance of tenure of land and other natural resources in Latin America. It analyzes mechanisms employed and identifies issues to be considered when aiming for responsible governance of tenure of land.

Esta guía sobre Las cuetiones de género y el acceso a la tierra se ha preparado para prestar apoyo a los administradores de tierras de los gobiernos y sus contrapartes de la sociedad civl sobre asuntos relacionados con el acceso a la tierra y la administración del desarrollo rural. Con frecuencia las cuestiones de género se dejan de lado en las intervenciones de desarrollo rural, y de ello derivan consecuencias negativas.

El enfoque territorial del desarrollo rural se está consolidando como una de las más importantes orientaciones de políticas y programas para las áreas rurales de América Latina. Las principales organizaciones internacionales como FAO, BID, Banco Mundial, FIDA, IICA y gran parte de los gobiernos nacionales, están reorientando sus intervenciones hacia una visión más integrada de la dinámica del medio rural, expresada en la idea de desarrollo territorial rural.

An overview of the forest resources and industries of the Union of Myanmar. The long term objectives of forestry in the country are given along with major impacting issues such as land use and people participation. Future scenarios are presented based on current policies and trends.

In this last issue of the newsletter for 2011, we introduce a new study on corruption in the land sector. The study was carried out by FAO and the Berlinbased Transparency International and it illustrates that the land sector is one of the main public sector areas where corruption exists. In climate change news, the world’s attention is focused on Durban, South Africa where the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – including FAO - are meeting this month.

This paper was prepared within the “Cooperatives and their alternatives” component of the Agrarian Structures Initiative (ASI) which a regional program of FAO in Europe and Central Asia. The purpose of this paper is to introduce Central Asian policy makers to the Western paradigm of service cooperative and to explore the constraints – both physical and ideological – to faster development and acceptance of cooperatives. We also discuss the need for a complete reorientation of the government’s approach to cooperative development.

Accroître l'accès des femmes à la terre est crucial pour lutter contre la faim et la pauvreté. Toutefois, les disparités entre les sexes concernant l'accès aux terres restent importantes dans la plupart des pays, quel que soit leur niveau de développement. Une nouvelle base de données de la FAO aide à comprendre les facteurs qui empêchent les femmes d'accéder à la terre, et à concevoir de meilleures politiques pour lutter efficacement contre cette situation.

وقد تم إعداد هذا الدليل على الجنس والحصول على الأراضي لدعم مديري الأراضي في الحكومات ونظرائهم في المجتمع المدني الذين يشاركون في الحصول على الأراضي وإدارة الأراضي  أسئلة في التنمية الريفية. وهذه هي حالة أن يتم ترك قضايا المساواة بين الجنسين خارج أو سوء فهم في مثل هذه الحالات، وغالبا مع نتائج سلبية في كثير من الأحيان. تم تصميم هذا الدليل لإظهار أين ولماذا إدراج النوع الاجتماعي مهم في المشاريع والبرامج التي تهدف إلى تحسين حيازة الأراضي وترتيبات إدارة الأراضي. ويوفر المادي لرفع مستوى الوعي لبعض القضايا الأكثر أهمية بين الجنسين التي تهدد الحصول على الأراضي والاستفادة من نتائجه.

Documento de trabajo sobre la tenencia de la tierra 18. Presenta los principales temas para caracterizar la gobernanza en la tenencia de la tierra y analiza los aspectos relacionados con la evolución de las problemáticas de política agraria en los diferentes países de América Central. Además, ofrece algunos ejemplos y lecciones aprendidas derivadas de los nuevos modelos de administración y mecanismos de acceso a la tierra que los gobiernos centroamericanos y la cooperación internacional han promovido en los últimos quince años en la Región.

This issue of Land Reform, Land Settlement and Cooperatives includes interesting descriptions of land tenure and related policies in Uganda, Tunisia, the United Republic of Tanzania and Morocco. Two thought-provoking articles on access to land and other assets focus on policies to reduce poverty and the function of markets in the allocation of production resources. In the first, J. Melmed-Sanjak and S.
