The world population of 8 billion people creates alarm for more food demand, hence the need to increase productivity per available resources. It is pointed out that 50% of Africa’s population are youth below 25 years, meanwhile, 66.1% of total population (61million) of Tanzania youths aged between 15-24 years are participating in the national labour force. Therefore, youth involvement in the dairy value chain is inevitable.

Agroecology is increasingly gaining importance around the world, including in Tunisia: It is defined as a holistic approach to redesign food systems in the purpose of concurrently achieving ecological, economic, and social sustainability. In this paper, we argue that principles behind the agroecological transition of food systems can be fully aligned with the holistic approach of One Health, and we provide an early conceptualization for that.

The consequence is suboptimal value chain performance with wide gender gaps in productivity, income, household food security, and poverty. Ecuador's Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition is using the Collect Earth Online tool to improve forest monitoring data accuracy

Ecuador’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (MAATE) is using a Collect Earth Online through a service co-developed with EcoCiencia and SERVIR-Amazonia (an Alliance – led regional program) to improve forest monitoring data accuracy in the Ecuadorian Amazon and to validate National Monitoring System maps and land cover estimates. MAATE continues to improve the monitoring of forest degradation and to support the provinces and indigenous forest- dependent groups to use the data for decision making.

Genetic bases of resistance to the rice hoja blanca disease deciphered by a quantitative trait locus approach

Abstract Rice hoja blanca (RHB) is one of the most serious diseases in rice-growing areas in tropical Americas. Its causal agent is RHB virus (RHBV), transmitted by the planthopper Tagosodes orizicolus Müir. Genetic resistance is the most effective and environment-friendly way of controlling the disease. So far, only 1 major quantitative trait locus (QTL) of Oryza sativa ssp. japonica origin, qHBV4.1, that alters the incidence of the virus symptoms in 2 Colombian cultivars has been reported.

The cattle sector is key to the economy of several Latin American countries, however, it strongly contributes to environmental degradation through the emission of greenhouse gases and deforestation, among others. The objective of this study is to analyze the long- and short-term relationships of variables such as population growth, expansion of pastureland, and deforestation with cattle greenhouse gas emissions and beef and dairy production for 15 Latin American countries.

Assessing policy options for sustainable water use in India’s cereal production system

In India, the production of rice and wheat account for more than 80% of its total agricultural water use. As farming is highly dependent on water availability, rapidly receding water levels require urgent measures to manage withdrawals. We assess policy instruments that can reduce pressures on water resources, while at the same time limiting adverse impacts on water-intensive cereal production systems, land-use changes and economic welfare.

Can farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) boost crop yields and improve food availability without using more mineral fertilizer? This question has been at the center of lively debates among the civil society, policy-makers, and in academic editorials. Proponents of the “yes” answer have put forward the “input reduction” principle of agroecology, i.e. by relying on agrobiodiversity, recycling and better efficiency, agroecological practices such as the use of legumes and manure can increase crop productivity without the need for more mineral fertilizer.
