This Act establishes the National Land Fund with the purpose of: a reasonable management of state-owned agricultural, forestry and other lands, promoting ecological agricultural production and economic efficiency, and creating a modern landed property structure based on family farms. Property rights in regard of the Fund are exercised by the Minister in charge of agriculture policy. The activity of the Fund is supervised by the State Audit Office.

Burma: Regime's land grabs disrupt lives in minority communities

Almost two-thirds of farming families from ethnic Ta’ang communities in Burma’s northern Shan State have lost land to the country’s powerful military, according to a new report.

The Ta’ang Students and Youth Organization, or TSYO, says 63 percent of farming families from the Ta’ang community in the area have had land confiscated by the military. The Ta’ang are also known as Palaung.

The structure of this review is as follows: the first section discusses how contract farming is defined for the purposes of this review and  briefly describes the history and extent of contract farming globally. The second section details the main factors contributing to the increased incidence of contract farming in developing countries, and describes the most common models utilised. Section 3 covers the main conceptual and theoretical perspectives on contract farming.

El presente Acuerdo aprueba el Reglamento Autónomo para el Otorgamiento de Arrendamientos en Asentamientos Campesinos, con la finalidad de asentar familias rurales y vincularlas a un régimen sano de posesión de la tierra, en procura de mejoramiento de su condición social y económica.

ActionAid publication ‘Failing the rural poor: Aid, agriculture and the Millennium Development Goals’ highlights the particularly harsh effect of the current global food crisis on rural women

The 2008 report by ActionAid suggests that, since women and girls are overrepresented among poor and excluded people, the food crisis is having a particularly harsh impact on them.  According to the FAO, even before the current crisis women made up 60% of the chronically hungry.

UNDP paper discusses ‘Decentralization and Women’s Rights to Land’

[adapted from UNDP] May, 2008- This UNDP discussion paper ‘Pro-Poor Land Tenure Reform and Democratic Governance’ provides a review of how different types of land tenure reform relate to decentralization and local governance, in theory and in practice.  The discussion suggests that in order to create more democratic and transparent local management of land resources, special mechanisms to protect women against direct and indirect discrimination, as well as the establishment of local land committees and land tribunals for conflict resolution are needed.
