In het landinrichtingsgebied Olst-Wesepe is de consequentie van het vigerende water- en natuurbeleid dat er een relatief groot oppervlak gronden aan de landbouw moet worden ont-trokken (aankoop) om zaken als ruimte voor waterberging, landschap en natuur te realiseren. De landinrichtingscommissie heeft ALTERRA opdracht gegeven te onderzoeken of er alternatieven zijn voor aankoop: kunnen die doelstellingen ook gerealiseerd worden door aanpassingen in de agrarische bedrijfsvoering voor te stellen, zodat meerboer(en) kunnen blijven, maar ook de beleidsdoelstellingen duurzaam gewaarborgd zijn.

The production of commodities such as palm oil and pulpwood is leading to large-scale land use change in the rural tropics to fulfil the demands of the increasing world population and overall living standard. On the one hand, such land use changes provide income to companies, smallholders and government actors. On the other hand, these can lead to land use conflicts and declines in forest cover, biodiversity, carbon stocks, and local food production.

Cropland expansion threatens biodiversity by driving habitat loss and impacts carbon storage through loss of biomass and soil carbon (C). There is a growing concern land use change (LUC) to cropland will result in a loss of ecosystem function and various ecosystem services essential for human health and wellbeing. This paper examines projections of future cropland expansion from an integrated assessment model IMAGE 3.0 under a 'business as usual' scenario and the direct impact on both biodiversity and C storage.

In de Systeeminnovatieprogramma’s voor de geïntegreerde en biologische open teelten zijn drie innovatieprojecten van start gegaan: De smaak van morgen, Nutriënten waterproof en Topsoil+. Elk project pakt een knelpunt op om de teelten duurzamer te maken en voor te bereiden op de geschetste toekomst van de open teelten in 2030. De toekomstbeelden schetsen een toekomst van agrarische functies die in diverse ringen rondom stedelijke kernen zijn gegroepeerd: dichtbij de stad kleinschalige verweven belevingslandbouw tot verder weg van de stad grootschalige productielandbouw

De landbouw kan worden getypeerd met vier ontwikkelingsrichtingen: grootschalige grondgebonden productie, geconcentreerde agroproductieparken, belevingslandbouw en agrarisch natuur- en landschapsbeheer. De richtingen hebben uiteenlopende perspectieven en ruimtelijke effecten: deze worden beschreven. Tevens zijn kaarten opgenomen met kansrijke locaties

De duurzaamheid van agroproductie in Nederland staat onder toenemende belangstelling. Duurzaamheid wordt niet alleen meer gezien als een ecologisch en sociaal-economisch aspect van agroproductie maar ook steeds meer als unique selling point. De duurzaamheid van de maïsteelt in Nederland staat onder druk en de noodzaak om een flinke stap te zetten naar meer duurzaamheid is groot.

Colonisation by, and spread of, animal species from the temperate zone are rather uncommon observations in the tropics. The study provides the first reports of two snail species of the genus Zonitoides in Sabah, Borneo, namely Z. arboreus (Say, 1819) and Z. nitidus (O.F. Muller, 1774). The identification was aided using partial sequences of 28S rDNA, and the barcoding sequence of COI. So far, the two Zonitoides species were found in locations where the natural forest cover had been disturbed, and only in the montane forest at elevations between 1500 and 2000 m a.s.l..

The demand for agricultural products (food, feed, fibre, and biomass for other purposes) produced in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) will increase for the coming decades. In addition, the global climate change will largely impact on the agricultural sector in Sub-Saharan Africa. Major challenges for the agricultural sector in SSA are that agricultural production systems depend on resources that are for a large part non-renewable, and that the current agricultural practices in SSA are major contributors to environmental degradation.

Toch merkt hij dat de normen voor fosfaat de ruimte beperken om aan duurzame bodemvruchtbaarheid te werken. Voor een goed saldo neigt hij naar intensievere teelten, voor de bodem naar voldoende rustgewassen.

This report answers the questions expressed in a motion Polderman. This motion asks about the consequences of abolishing the existing pig and poultry rights (animal production rights). In this study, we first address the creation of these production rights in the framework of the mineral policy (or manure policy) and the significance of these rights. Then insight is provided about the expected development of the extent of pig and poultry farming, bases on the situation whereby animal production rights and the milk quota end in 2015. The environmental impact is also calculated.
