At the Land Portal, we believe that data and information are powerful tools for achieving our vision of a land governance system that benefits those with the most insecure land rights and the greatest vulnerability to landlessness. However, information sources remain highly fragmented, unstructured, poorly curated and represent a narrow range of perspectives; they continue to be published in ways that do not facilitate maximum discovery, engagement and reuse. Until policy and decision-makers, intermediaries and grassroots groups have access to the data and information they need to make sound decisions, their initiatives will fail to achieve maximum impact.

The Land Portal exists to fill in these gaps, and to nurture a vibrant online platform to inform and engage with partners.  We do this by promoting open data and the sharing of best practices and stimulating debate and collaboration both on and offline. We provide a vital bridge for those grappling with complex land governance issues, from researchers and NGOs through to governments and grassroots communities, by  connecting people, facilitating dialogue and by mending fragmented information. 

Raising awareness of “open data” and the critical role it plays in realizing tenure security for individuals and communities around the world continues to be a great challenge. To this end, we make use of every possible conference, meeting and speaking engagement to promote the concept of “going open,” while recognizing that, given the highly sensitive nature of land data (particularly for vulnerable communities), not everything can or should be made entirely open.

We set out an ambitious new strategy in 2019  to improve the documentation, mapping and monitoring of land governance issues; enrich and inform the global debate on land rights; and democratize access to the land governance “information ecosystem” and improve the flow of data between diverse actors. 

In order to promote, inform and enrich global debate and practice on key land issues, the Land Portal aims to build a network of contributors across the globe that ensure that local news, blogs, events, publications and more are included on the Land Portal website in various languages, and to offer communications services, through social media and email campaigns, targeted specifically for people living in a certain region or speaking a certain language.

General Responsibilities

S/he will have the responsibility to update the Land Portal website with land-related news, events and blogs in Portuguese, to send out a Portuguese news digest to the Land Portal’s Portuguese mailing list every month and to handle the Portuguese social media outreach for the Land Portal Foundation.

Specific responsibilities

1. Update the Land Portal regularly with Portuguese content and news.

2. Review existing information source daily and check for news, new events, stories, blog posts and publications;

3. Keep an updated list of sources;

4. Select and publish at least one information item every day in the respective section for news, events or blogs - for a total of at least 20 information items per month- in coordination with the Communications Specialist and following the Land Portal editorial guidelines.

5. In case of short internal Land Portal related news, translate them into Portuguese if necessary.
    

2. Send out monthly Mailchimp newsletter and news digest:

3. Release one news digest every three weeks, using the existing news digest template;

4. Make a selection of content in coordination with the Land Portal Communication Specialist and following Land Portal editorial guidelines.
    

3. Be responsible for the Portuguese Social Media outreach for the Land Portal Foundation

4. Manage the independent Portuguese Land Portal Twitter account and send out regular social media messages, under supervision of the Land Portal Communications Specialist;

5. Co-manage the Land Portal Facebook page with Portuguese messaging under the supervision of the Land Portal’s Communications Specialist;

6. Handle any other social media coverage that may be effective in the target audience of the Portuguese-speaking land community.

Profile

• Knowledge of land governance issues.

• Knowledge of the development context in Lusophone countries.

• Native level Portuguese.

• Flexible working times.

• Proactive attitude.

• Previous experience with social media and communications is considered an advantage.

Reporting

The Local Content Associate will report to the Land Portal Communications Specialist and will report time spent against the ToRs every month in the Land Portal Foundation’s Timesheets.

Position

This position is home-based and will be staffed on a part-time  consultancy basis for a period ending September 30th 2024. Consultants who were never hired before by the Land Portal will receive an agreement for a probationary period of 3 months. This agreement can be extended to the aforementioned end date. The official language for this position is English. The salary level will depend on experience and seniority.
