Resource Equity | Land Portal

Resource Equity works to advance women’s rights to land and natural resources in order to promote women’s economic and social empowerment, and to reduce poverty while promoting lasting and equitable global development.

Resource Equity was founded in December 2014 as a women-run, women-first non-profit which focuses exclusively on gender issues related to land and resource rights. We work in concert with other organizations worldwide to advocate for social and policy change that will enable women to have secure rights to land, and develop the capacity of others to do this work around the world.

Collectively, we have more than 40 years of experience working on women’s land and resource issues worldwide, in Africa (Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Morocco, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda); Asia (China, India, Vietnam); South America (Peru); and Eastern Europe and Central Asia (Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan). We have worked for the World Bank, MCC, USAID, GIZ, DFID, the FAO, Ford Foundation, Care International, and many others.

In addition to our advocacy and capacity development work, we teach classes at the University of Washington School of Law and we run LandWise, the digital collection of laws governing rights to land and property for women.

Resource Equity is a project of the Tides Foundation.

Evidence shows that women can benefit from having individualised land rights formalized in their names. However, similar evidence is not available for formalization of land rights that are based on collective tenure. Studies have estimated that as much as 65 percent of the world’s land is held under customary, collective-tenure systems.
