This Environment and Social Management Pan (ESMP) has been developed by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) to clarify (i) the measures that will be taken during the implementation of project activities to eliminate or offset adverse E&S impacts, or to reduce them to acceptable levels; and (ii) actions needed to implement these measures during the implementation of the Accelerating Impact of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project activities in Ethiopia.

The environmental and social screening exercise conducted on proposed CSA demonstration plots confirmed a range of Environmental and Social (E&S) risks, which if not mitigated, could cause harm to people and the environment. Based on these findings, this ESMP is prepared to clarify (i) the measures that will be taken during the implementation of project activities to eliminate or offset adverse E&S impacts, or to reduce them to acceptable levels; and (ii) actions needed to implement these measures.

Divergent climate smartness priority setting by practitioners vis-à-vis advisors: implications on inclusivity, one-health achievement, and enabling environment

By capturing the prioritization of 22 innovations by 71 farmers against those of advisors, this paper examines the level of awareness and contextualized conceptualization of 31 indicators of Climate Smartness Plus (equity, one health and enabling environment). Concordance analysis reveals differences in prioritization among farmers and agricultural advisors: with advisors giving relatively higher ratings as they set broader goals than farmers. We find that farmers give equal priority to productivity, adaptation, and mitigation while advisors overly prioritise productivity

From COVID-19 to emerging crop diseases and exotic pests that threaten natural ecosystems, invasive species are a major problem globally. Invasive populations, such as antibiotic- or pesticide-resistant genotypes or new pathotypes, are also a serious challenge. Desirable populations, such as improved crop varieties and endangered species, also have the potential to spread under the right conditions. Successful seed systems may require both types of management: supporting the spread of new crop varieties and stopping or slowing the spread of seedborne pathogens.

The Government of Uganda has implemented programs and policies to improve the agricultural sector’s recent underperformance. Uganda’s two main food security crops, bananas and cassava, have been critically affected by two diseases: Banana Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW) and Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD). The effectiveness of agronomic and cultural practices to control these diseases has been limited, requiring better alternatives. The Ugandan R&D sector in collaboration with international partners have developed genetically engineered innovations that can control both diseases.

Abstract. Drought is predicted to increase in the future due to climate change, bringing with it myriad impacts on ecosystems. Plants respond to drier soils by reducing stomatal conductance in order to conserve water and avoid hydraulic damage. Despite the importance of plant drought responses for the global carbon cycle and local and regional climate feedbacks, land surface models are unable to capture observed plant responses to soil moisture stress.
