Climate change is increasingly threatening the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. Increased climate variability, including changes in mean temperatures, variation in the onset of rains, and increases in extreme weather events, are directly affecting the growing seasons of commercial and subsistence crops, significantly disturbing socio-economic activities in the agricultural sector and leaving many smallholder farmers in a situation of food insecurity and malnutrition.

The quest to transform and hasten the role of smallholder farms in agricultural development and food security through farmer firm linkages has dominated development interventions in low-income countries for several decades. This has mostly been pursued through single- or multi-contract schemes implemented in isolation. Several studies have analyzed the efects of these schemes on smallholder farms with mixed results. A new paradigm is to use Agricultural Public Private Partnership (Ag-PPP) to achieve wider and sustainable impacts.

Edible crickets are among the praised insects that are gaining recognition as human food and livestock feed with a potential of contributing to food security and reduction of malnutrition. Globally, the sustainable use of crickets as food or feed is undermined by lack of information on the number of the edible crickets, the country where they are consumed, and the developmental stages consumed. Furthermore, lack of data on their nutritional content and the potential risks to potential consumers limits their consumption or inclusion into other food sources.

Feed Me Sustainably – A tool for improving the sustainability of public food procurement programmes using threatened crop diversity

In order to facilitate sustainability transitions for food procurement programs, the Alliance of Bioversity-CIAT is developing a decision-support tool to evaluate and monitor the socio-economic and environmental impacts of different food procurement scenarios. Such a “Feed Me Sustainably” (FMS) tool can help build a more reliable evidence-base for policy-makers, food procurement managers, and other key stakeholders to address the challenges and opportunities for improving the sustainability and food security outcomes from school meal procurement programs.
